The Best Book On Whales And Humans You Can Get May 23, 2000 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
'Among Whales' is a fantastic book: eminently readable, consistently interesting, learned, compassionate, and passionate about whales and humans. I reccommend Payne's book unreservedly, and I have read a great many works about whales and marine biology. This is the best! I hope he writes another - Roger, we need more people like you to remind us that though most of us rarely have the privilege to see whales in their natural habitat, we have a great deal to answer for when it comes to their survival. Your theory that regulated whale-watching can be beneficial to the whales in terms of raising public awareness and sympathy for their plight is certainly true in my experience: having gone out twice last year to watch the humpbacks and fin whales off Stellwagen Bank, my admiration and concern for them and their well-being has soared. It was a fantastic experience, and sent me scurrying to the bookshops to find out more about them - your book was the best I found. More, please!
