Avoid this "trainer" at all costs August 14, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I just came across this book while searching for other training books, and I'm not surprised it was nearly last on the Amazon list. I wanted to give it ZERO stars, but the least I could do was 1 - but if I could I'd rate it a MILLION ZERO stars.
I watched a DVD of this man "imprinting" a foal years ago at College, and myself and a friend wrote a letter of complaint to the DVD publishers.
The "imprint" methods this man uses are absolutely diabolical and completely unnecessary - i.e. on the DVD, minutes after the foal is born Miller has the foal on the floor, sticking his fingers down his ears, rubbing it all over, rubbing all manner of other things all over the foal - it is crucial that the foal, when born, is allowed to get to the mares milk as soon as possible, as the foal has no antibodies in its blood! So this guy is exposing a newly born foal to foreign objects which could be life threatening. And there is much worse throughout the DVD of his foal "training" methods. The man makes me sick.
Don't buy this book, or the DVD if you come across it - no, actually do buy it, watch/read it and then complain to the author and publishers at the blatant and unnecessary cruelty this man is subjecting innocent foals to.
If you want a good, solid foundation with any foal or youngster then turn to the Richard Maxwell books - he is a true, knowledgeable, and sympathetic horse trainer, who gets results based on a trusted partnership, not bullying, cruelty and dominance.
