Stylish and practical book on wildlife-friendly gardens September 29, 2004 21 out of 23 found this review helpful
This beautifully illustrated and clearly laid-out book is full of practical ideas for encouraging helpful insects, birds and animals to live in your garden - or even windowbox. There are plenty of practical, step-by-step projects for smaller gardens, eg: a mini pond to attract frogs that will feed on slugs. For anyone who has had a favourite flowering plant destroyed by an invasion of aphids, you can now get your revenge. Ladybirds are the aphid eaters par excellence apparently and coriander is one of their favourite plants (also a favourite of many other helpful bugs). Really clear symbols show you what to plant, where and how to tend it. The well-written text offers an A-Z of some familiar "bug-friendly" plants (buddleia for butterflies) as well as more unusual ones. A stylish book that's genuinely useful as well as enjoyable to browse, this book would make a great present too. Unlike so many contemporary gardening books, this one proves that style does not always need to triumph over substance.

Practical ideas for small gardens, beautifully illustrated September 4, 2004 3 out of 8 found this review helpful
A really clear layout and well-written, informative text makes this not only an enjoyable book to browse but a useful, working guide to encouraging "good bugs" in your garden (it would also make a great present). For anyone who has ever had a favourite flowering plant destroyed by an aphid invasion, you can now get your revenge. Ladybirds are the answer and there are loads of plants that you can use to encourage them (coriander is one of the best apparently). The book has plently of practical projects for smaller gardens, eg: mini ponds. Clear symbols and planting/care descriptions about some familiar - and less familiar wildlife friendly plants - ensures that style doesn't triumph over substance as is so often the case with gardening books.
