4 out of 5 stars solid book with some nice touches   February 29, 2008

This book has all the usual information found in books of this nature on this topic but also has some nice additions

1) The audio c.d. of various wolf noises made by both old and young wolves
2) A life size picture section giving a definate idea of the size of the wolves (Including teeth, eyes and paws)
3) The story that accompanies the wolf information
4) Evidence of certain behaviours are taken from the same pack which gives a feeling of closeness to the subjects.

The only downsides are that just as individual wolves differ so do wolf packs and as such this book may not give the broadest picture of wolves in general. The book may have been better if it had included a life size foldout page or poster of a wolf as after browsing the life size section this is what I really desired to see.

Never the less the photography is excellent and the additional features make this book stand out from other books on this subject.

Having seen the Discovery channel "Living with Wolves" documentary, I was, like you, intrigued and entranced with what I had seen and heard. I admit that initially I had not been that interested with wolves, however that documentary, and now this book as totally changed my views in more ways than one...
You see both book and film go together, you need to see and hear them both...Yes, i did say hear!, ...but its a book you will say! however you will find, attached to the inside of the back cover, a 30 minute CD of recordings made by Jamie Dutcher of the members of the Sawtooth pack howling...it is, quite frankly, completly captivating....
As I slowly turned and admired each and every page, (I to am a wildlife photographer, and so can well appreciate the hours and patient it took to get these images...),I was struck by each animals eyes, they had been photographed at a point where something was being said, but i couldn't understand what. So i looked through it again, this time listening to the cd at the same time...and i was, still am in fact, in awe of the effect it as had on me!
I would at this stage, like to point out that I am not, by any means, a soft hearted "Bunny Hugger", I do not for one moment believe these beautiful creatures are "cuddly", or domesticated, as only a pet dog can be, or that there is something mystical or spirtual going on with eack turn of the page, and each spin of the CD, (although the haunting combination of howls and forest background noise recorded tells me there could be...)however what this book has done, is, what i believe it set out to do, and thats turn one single ignorant human being into a more understanding and ultimatly grateful one...not just more understanding of wolves, I know that that would take another life in another lifetime, but a litle more understanding of us as human beings, we are supposedly the most intelligent of all creatures, but we are fundamentally the most blinkered of all creatures in how we exist in the world around us...
So, anyone who cares about the natural world should read this book....please listen to the cd whilst you are, and i trully believe that for the first time you will appreciate that we are not the only intelligent beings on this planet...Jim and Jamie Dutcher, thank you....
