Interesting, but poor quality footage July 30, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I'll be honest here - this isn't a fantastic DVD. I bought it whilst on holiday when it caught my eye in a shop window because I'm a huge fan of wolves, but I was slightly disappointed.
The DVD itself is quite informative; especially for people with a specific interest in the Yellowstone wolves or people who know relatively little about wolves to start with. It has some good factual points and describes in detail the hierarchies and construction of the packs in the park, but I was disappointed by the video quality. Bearing in mind that the footage is quite old, it's still slightly fuzzy and the colours are dull (particularly compared to the cover photo). I do believe my copy to be genuine, so I'm assuming (although I can't be certain) that other copies will be the same.
This is not hugely important I'll grant you, but it does deduct from the enjoyment of the film because it's not as visually striking as it might have been if it was a modern series. Also, I imagine the information contained is not that current as it's older. It does have some nice history of the wolves to it, and details the adaptation of the packs as time progressed and which packs merged etc. which was fairly interesting. Being a fan of wolves, I did enjoy learning about how the population at Yellowstone has grown over the years, and the story of the reintroduction to the natural habitat.
For more general information, the DVD is split into two episodes of the series (both about wolves) and has a broader trailer for the entire collection, with mini-clips of the DVDs about other animals. This is nice for further information if you were interested in purchasing more of this series but doesn't add much to the DVD.
There are no other special features, and I feel that their time would have been well spent adding subtitles and enhancing the footage. All things considered though, this is an old program and despite the poor video quality, it's good for studying the wolves behaviour at a basic level and it has got some nice footage of wolves. For me, I would recommend the DVD to people with little or no prior knowledge of wolves, or those (like me) who enjoy watching footage of wolves.
