Product Description The goal of Elementary Algebra: Concepts and Applications, 7e is to help today's students learn and retain mathematical concepts by preparing them for the transition from "skills-oriented" elementary algebra courses to more "concept-oriented" college-level mathematics courses, as well as to make the transition from "skill" to "application." This edition continues to bring your students a best-selling text that incorporates the five-step problem-solving process, real-world applications, proven pedagogy, and an accessible writing style. The Bittinger/Ellenbogen series has consistently provided teachers and students with the tools needed to succeed in developmental mathematics. This edition has an even stronger focus on vocabulary and conceptual understanding as well as making the mathematics more accessible to students. Among the features added are new Concept Reinforcement exercises, Student Notes that help students avoid common mistakes, and Study Summaries that highlight the most important concepts and terminology from each chapter.

This particular Math book has limited examples and rarely walks you through the complete set of steps necessary to solve simple or complex equations.
Clear and Thorough January 11, 2008 We are using this book for our homeschooling Algebra I class. I had lots of math for my Engineering Degree, all the way up through Calculus II. I think this book is good for elementary Algebra students, older than about 12 or 13, and for those older students who want to refresh themselves on the basic concepts. A self-starting student, age 15+, should have little trouble teaching himself from this book. (I recommend that other students get supplementary texts and/or a teacher). The explanations are very clear and are presented in a logical sequence. When possible, the authors have used graphic representations to illustrate the mathematical rules, formulas, and solutions. At the end of each section, there are about 60-80 pure math problems, about 10-20 (or more) "real-world" or "application" problems, a few conceptual questions (requiring a genuine understanding of the concepts learned so far), and a few problems using graphing calculators.
I deducted half a star because it has the same flaw that most major math books have these days: the application problems come way too soon after the introduction of the basic math concepts. Students should have only pure math for a few years before they are required to use it on "real-world" problems. It's too much at once. A math book should be just that: math, nothing more.
Another half star was deducted for its politically-correct bias against White men: All the heroes but one profiled in this book are women; in one edition, I forget which one, there is a non-White man profiled. Clearly an anti-White and anti-male bias is at work here. Boys reading this book probably think math is only for girls.
If you want a smaller book that explains basic Algebra clearly (no example problems, unfortunately) or want a refresher of elementary Algebra, buy Painless Algebra by Lynette Long Ph.D., from Barron's.

I recieved this book the fastest I've ever received any book, although seller was in my home state. She was communicative about the edition and condition of the book which I loved and the book is in truly new condition! I would buy from her again without hesitation.
Easy - Simple - Plain July 8, 2001 13 out of 16 found this review helpful
The problems given in this book were very easy to understand. The author shows step by step how to do the given problems and the answers are refferenced in the back. I always used how the book did the problems, not the teacher's way. I am always coming back to this book to refresh my math skills.
