Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
"Whirlwind" is the story of three weeks in Tehran in February 1979: three weeks of fanaticism, passion, self-sacrifice and heartbreak. Caught between the revolutionaries and the forces of international intrigue is a team of professional pilots. They are ordered to flee to safety with their helicopters. Two of them, both Europeans, have Iranian wives whom they love beyond safety and politics.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining adventure yarn in an exotic culture   October 10, 2008
Like Clavell's other books, this is an adventure tale set in a culture that was unfamiliar to most Westerners when he wrote it. This time it is oil workers in the Middle East trying to escape the revolution in Iran, with the story told from both western and Iranian viewpoints. It was an entertaining read if not quite as good as King Rat or Shogun.

4 out of 5 stars Clavell is the master   September 26, 2008
On his last novel of the Asian saga Clavell didn't let me down. Having read -and loved- all his previous novels I was anxious to start with Whirlwind. Even though it is not his best work, it has all the qualities that make Clavell one of my favorite authors. The book has a sound plot, great storytelling, fiction mixed with history and good characters. I truly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars The 21st Century began in 1979   February 17, 2008

I first read Whirlwind when the hardback appeared in 1986. Although a great admirer of Clavell's work, I found it tough going. The memory of the 1979 Iranian hostage was still fresh, and it just rankled. Others apparantly felt the same way, for sales for the book were disappointing. It is the only Clavell novel not currently in print. Although I reread other Clavell works from time to time, I did not reread Whirlwind until late in 2007.

I'm happy to say that, like fine wine, Whirlwind has aged very well. The period it recounts so vividly is ground zero for all our present difficulties. By way of contrast, Tom Clancy's Red Storm Rising, the big seller of 1986, was dated and obsolete five years after it was published. And as in all of Clavell's works, Whirlwind yields many valuable insights into the human condition.

The 21st Century began in 1979. Whirlwind details the birth pangs of our present troubled era. Whirlwind is overdue for a reissue, and I devoutly hope that one will be forthcoming in the near future.

3 out of 5 stars Service   February 8, 2008

My order was shipped within the timeframe, but the seller should have been more informative regarding the status of the order rather than me having to constantly trying to fine out the status myself.

1 out of 5 stars I tried, I really did try!   November 14, 2007

I LOVED reading Shogun and Noble House, great books, everyone should read them, it should be mandatory reading for all high school students. So only for my love of Clavell did I try to read Whirlwind twice, yes twice. And the sad part is I am thinking about trying to read it again, I miss reading Clavell. Its ether Whirlwind or read Tai-Pan a 2nd time or Shogun or Noble House a 3rd time.
