Broad, shallow, unobjectionable, vanilla March 23, 2007 My primary criticism of this book is that it fails to capture the essential flavor of the periods it talks about. Instead, everything is neatly summed up in little sound-bites that seldom venture into any controversial territory. I don't know whether the authors just lack any deep insight into the events they write about (how sad), or whether they're trying to get their textbook accepted at a larger number of schools by not offending anyone. Either way, the result is the same: a text that covers the entire lifespan of the United States, without saying much about any of it.
If you're looking for depth, you would probably be better served by reading books about specific periods rather than relying on a single-volume treatment like this.
My other criticism of this book is that it's physically painful to read. It has a fairly light typeface printed on high-gloss paper. Sub-section headings are just capitalized versions of the same typeface -- very hard to find when scanning the book. Ouch.

Highly informative, highly relatable, and highly dense. Today was the first day that I read out of this book without falling asleep-- I actually use this book when I have trouble sleeping. It isn't written in a very engaging way. Last year for AP European history I read every word of Jackson J. Spielvogel's Western Civilization (5th ed) but I just can't get through this book. The language isn't tough or anything like that, it just takes tons of time and motivation to get through it. My strategy is reading the related review section in my AP US history review book and highlighting that down, and then attempting to skim this text. So in general, I'm mixed, but it's definitely boring for the most part.
