One of the Best Overall Treatments of Book Publicity November 13, 2008 This is one of the most comprehensive books on getting publicity for your book. I take it down from my shelf and reread it each time I publish a new book, so my copy is well-worn. All aspects of book marketing are thoroughly covered. The author tells you how to write a marketing plan and how to carry it out. Although the emphasis is on a print, radio and TV campaign, there is also a chapter on the internet. The internet material is not as complete as it it is some books but this does not detract from it. The chapter on the internet has a large number of excellent suggestions. Her chapter on bookstore signings is also particularly good, and she gives numerous suggestions on how to make it a success. The latter part of the book is filled with useful resources such as media directories, online newsletters, publicists and press release services. Overall, the book is an invaluable source for anyone wanting to publicize their book. Highly recommended.
All you need to know September 30, 2008 This book is a must for any entrepreneur looking to create publicity. It is the best book out there. It provides tools, ideas, facts and most importanly contacts. The writer makes it simple and easy to understand. It is a fantastic easy to read resource. It should belong in every serious marketing and publicty library. Vickie Jimenez www.successsystemsnow.com
Helped me get noticed by Sports Illustrated! September 18, 2008 I'm a former Associated Press reporter with more than a decade of experience in journalism. I now work full-time in public relations and even teach classes on self-publishing and PR help for writers. So I don't give this review lightly.
That said, this book was an immense help to my PR efforts. In fact, the plans and methods in it helped me get my novel The King's Game noticed by the likes of Sports Illustrated and scores of talk radio outlets, magazines, newspapers and online outlets. I even planned out and executed a Spring Training book tour with the book's help.
It's packed with equal parts education about the PR side of publishing, how to create your own unique strategy, and tons of tools/resources/links to boot.
Great stuff!
To New Heights! September 3, 2008 Everyone who is an author needs to read a book like this one... maybe even two, three or more books like this one! Deval puts it all together in a concise, clear fashion. Use it in tandem with Chapter 7, 11 and 12 of my own book "The Expert's Edge"... it will push you and your book to new heights!
Every Book Author or Would-Be Author Needs To Wear Out This Book! August 9, 2008 It's hard for any author to find straight-forward information to publicity strategies which will help their book get attention and garner book sales. For the last five years as I speak at writers' conferences and other venues, I've been recommending PUBLICIZE YOUR BOOK! Why?
Unlike some of the authors of books in this niche subject area, Deval has been in the trenches of publicity as the director of publicity for several publishing houses and is currently the publisher of Hearst Books. The tone and the information in this book are different because of her inside information about the publisher world as it relates to publicity. My copy of her 2003 book is worn, tagged with posts and highlighted throughout the pages.
I recommend you get this updated version because the contact information, websites and even the update tools like for social networking are included. The world of book promotion and publicity is ever-changing and Deval has performed a great service to the writing community through her update of this excellent resource.
Whether you are a brand new author or a much published author, add this book to your arsenal of ideas and plans. If you have never been published and want to be published, you still need this book because you can learn things which will help you shape your own book marketing plans in your pitches to literary agents and publishers. Savvy authors stand out and here's a great resource to gain positive attention for your ideas.
