1 out of 5 stars Let be careful here...   September 6, 2008

Ok people, your comments worry me. Just remmeber that God does not need any "help" to translate what he is trying to say to the reader. His word is powerful enough to penetrate anyone's life. No matter how "difficult" is seems for you to read. His word was written as it is for a purpose. Who would not understand this verse?

Hebrews 4:12
12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

If you don't understand His word. It will be a good idea for you to pray God before reading the bible. You will be amazed at how much you will understand it once you start reading.

Lets not be lazy and comform to an "easy" to read bible. As christians we should be reading the only word of God and that is the bible. I prefer the old version King James Version. Another thing that we should be worried about these "translations" is, How are you going to witness and cite a verse to someone who needs to hear about God/Jesus when you have been reading a translated bible with no chapters and verses?

So lets not replace the TRUE and ONLY word of God for a man's translation!
Lets not comform to an "easy" way to read the bible, unless you don't want to read the word of God, which I am sure is not the case. Wake up!

5 out of 5 stars New Testament in Modern English by Phillips   April 22, 2008
This is a fantastic translation! It brings Bible times into modern English. Even though some are newer translations, this rates at the top.

5 out of 5 stars a wonderful translation!   April 8, 2008
I have always been a fan of the J.B. Philips translation that is easy to read. It truly brings the gospel to life! This student edition is great because it has verse numbers on the side to facilitate looking for particular passages.

I am enjoying this book very much. I like the simple way it translates the verses in the bible. It's like reading a true story.

4 out of 5 stars A Solid Bible, but not for research   September 4, 2007

Some that have been critical of this bible I feel miss who J.B. Phillip's intended audience was. Let me allow him to speak for himself through his introduction.

Preface to The Student Edition, " When I began the work of translating Paul's epistles in 1941 I certainly had no idea that my efforts would be published or that I should eventually translate the whole New Testament.I wrote for young people who belonged to my youth group, most of them not much above school leaving age, and I undertook the work simply because I found the Authorized Version was not intelligible to them. My primary aim was not in any sense to compete with the version of 1611, but to communicate to young people inspired truths of which they were almost entirely ignorant."

J.B. Phillips brought his work of The New Testament to print to bring God's Word to those who would other wise not understand it. In my opinion that makes him a great man, and I find value in this Bible. I don't think it's perfect, and I don't feel it should be used for in depth study (there are better bibles out there for that). Having said that I have met ministers and well informed church members who highly value this bible. It's fantastic for reading the bible for pure pleasure (which I feel is it's primary benefit), and not for study in my humble opinion.

I rate it four out of five stars because I don't feel it should be used in depth bible study. However, that should not diminish it's value to it's intended audience.
