Product Description Nutrition: An Applied Approach presents introductory nutrition to readers in an applied format that discourages memorization and promotes long-term understanding of the material. The authors capitalize on readers' natural interest in nutrition by demonstrating how nutrition relates to their health, and by addressing and debunking commonly held misconceptions they have about nutrition. The book's functional organization of the micronutrient chapters encourages readers to develop a conceptual framework in which to organize the information and helps them understand the role of nutrients in their bodies and in their own health. The Role of Nutrition in Our Health, Designing a Healthful Diet, The Human Body, Carbohydrates, Fat, Proteins, Fluid and Electrolyte Balance, Antioxidant Function, Bone Health, Energy Metabolism and Blood Formation, Energy Balance and Weight Management, Physical Activity, Disordered Eating, Food Safety and Technology, Pregnancy and the First Year of Life, Childhood, Adolescence and Adulthood. caution September 12, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I ordered priority shipping, it still took me two solid weeks to receive my book. Seller had poor communication with me. Also, book does not come with access code so I had to pay an extra $57 for that. So in the end I saved no money and wasted two weeks.
Pretty good March 24, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This book is a fairly good introduction to the far-reaching study of nutrition. However there were a few very old-fashioned comments made about vegetarianism and veganism. The attitude towards these diets in light of all the emerging research that vegetarianism is one of the most healthful diets for the human body is rather archaic. The authors comment that one can survive on a vegetarian diet, but that a lot of caution needs to go into it when it is really very simple. They also argue that the vegan diet is deficient in many nutrients that are actually very easy to get. They also claim that the macrobiotic diet can lead to death and implied this potentially good diet should be avoided.
Excellent nutritional guide and up-to date! March 1, 2007 This is an excellent book on nutrition and all its related topics such as illnesess, weight management, lactating mothers, etc. I liked it because is non partisan and up to date.
Nutrition, It's good for you! December 23, 2006 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
This was a required text for my college nutrtion course. It was very useful and helpful for me when I wanted to learn how to combine foods for the most nutrient rich diet for my family. I have a young child and wanted to learn the best foods to optimize his health. There was a chapter specific to his age group, as well as chapters on nutrient needs for the pregnant and lacting mother. I was fascinated by the wealth of information this text provides. The authors need to review some of their end of chapter tests and be certain that they have answered correctly.
Good book...bad timing September 26, 2005 1 out of 5 found this review helpful
This book is a good product to learn the basics about nutrition. The supplier on the other hand took forever to get the book to me...had I known that there was going to be a delay I would have not ordered the book from them...
