another 5 stars September 30, 2008 I have a Ryobi 9" bandsaw (Home Depot special, eh?) that ran okay - I had used it for several projects over the past 3 or 4 years. But I noticed on the last one that the blade wasn't tracking well, and the cuts weren't smooth - so I bought this book after reading the reviews on several titles. What I learned and was able to apply made it a great choice. Now the saw is tuned and singing a different song - one that I can whistle along with happily...and there's still more reading to do in the book!
Great book May 27, 2008 I've read several bandsaw books, and this one is my favorite. Some of the information feels a little bit dated, since it is about 25 years old, but all the technique and general bandsaw information is tops. Highly recommended.
Great start up book April 6, 2008 Reading this book before my band saw arrived made the set up and assembly much easier than just using the instruction book supplied by the manufacturer. I keep the book close at hand to answer any questions that might come up while planning or working on a project.
Worth having for "tune-up" instructions alone December 26, 2006 If you have a new bandsaw (or you have an old on that's not running perfectly), this book will tell you how to set up and tune the saw. The writing is very clear, the steps are logical and the illustrations are useful (even though they're not in color). You can find bandsaw tune-up instructions on the Web -- for example at Woodcraft's site -- but nothing is as complete as this book.
Beyond the tune-up/set-up guidance, you get excellent advice on blade selection and some useful ideas on how to take advantage of the bandsaw's versatility. You may want to skip the first part of the book, which describes the history of bandsaws and the types of saws available. That section is interesting but not particularly compelling.
One thing I like is that the author doesn't bash Asian imports (Jet, Ridgid, Grizzy etc.). And the tune up guidance helped me get the saw I bought from Home Depot running smoothly.
Makes my old saw like new March 16, 2006 I have a 20 year old Taiwan made band saw that I was about to replace. After following the tune up instructions in this book and a few inexpensive parts, the saw runs better than new. Anyone with a band saw, old or new should have this book.
