5 out of 5 stars Hey, Read J David Moeller's true account of seeing a ghost...Pg 54   August 10, 2008
I loved this book. Of course, I loved my story, "A Distinct Odor of Blood" on page 54...but I also loved the simplicity and honesty of the writing in the other 99 stories. No one was trying for the Pulitzer, they were just recounting their experiences. Simple, down to earth writing and story telling. A must-have on any book lover's shelf!

It was a great book to read. Very interesting, my son read it after me.

Hi ... I'm one of the 100 whose story was included in this great little book. I can assure you all, that what I wrote was true, "The Three-Legged Table".

This is the only time in my life so far, I'm 68 now, that I ever had a ghost experience. I feel bad about that ...

Enjoy the book, and who knows, perhaps one day you'll be able to write about your own encounter too.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite   November 22, 2007

I confess, I still don't believe in ghosts. I keep an open mind, but so far, I'm not convinced.

Nevertheless, I love true ghost stories. I don't try to debunk them, nor do I see them as any kind of evidence for an afterlife. I just enjoy them.

I own a large and rapidly growing collection of books of true ghost stories. This one is my favorite. USA Weekend, a nationwide "magazine" included as a weekly newspaper supplement, asked readers to submit their true ghost stories for a special Halloween feature. Over 500 stories were submitted; they ended up printing only six of them. That seemed a shame, so they decided to publish a book with a larger selection.

I'm not quite sure why I enjoy this book so much. Perhaps it's the sheer variety. There are one hundred stories - more than the average book of ghost stories. They come from all over the country; there are even a few that take place in other countries. Some of them are stories that have been passed down in families for generations; others are very recent. The narrators are young and old, so the tales cover a very wide timeframe (but are none the nebulous "legends" you get in some books). Some of the ghosts are friendly, even loving; others are unnerving, if only because they are unknown. A few are downright evil. Some of the hauntings are subtle; others are downright Spielbergian. It's a great mix. Most of the stories are fairly short and easy to read - which makes them addictive. It's hard resist reading "just one more."

Sadly, they've never done a sequel. I wish they would. Either do another "Halloween special," or make another book out of the 400+ stories previously submitted that weren't used in this book.

4 out of 5 stars I Never Believed USA Today Could Compile a Great Ghost Story Book Until...   November 13, 2007

Compulsively readable collection of succinct, credible ghost encounters that run the gamut of scenarios. Nothing too bone-chillingly scary, but most accounts are pretty interesting, and there are no boring speculative interjections by an author stringing them together -- just story after story. This is one you'll read again and again.
