Product Description
In My Life and Hard Times, Thurber returns to his starting pointthe delightful chaos and frustrations brought on by family, boyhood, youth, odd dogs, and recalcitrant machinery in the quiet university town of his birth. This is one of the most deeply humorous books of our century. Not only is it a "memoir" that takes into account the crumbling of empires, it talks "largely about small matters and smally about great affairs." Mostly it is about the widely incredible things people do when they think they are acting sensibly. Yet Thurber does more than just tickle your funny bone. He has quietly and unobtrusively, but permanently, deflated your false pride in the essential sanity and prudence of the human race.

Talent Like This is Rare August 25, 2008 Thurber's classic about growing up in Columbus, Ohio is laugh out loud funny, even 80 years removed. Talent like this is rare. He deserves his literary reputation.
My Life & Hard Times February 8, 2008 James Thurber was one of the funiest authors of all time and this book cements his reputation. I enjoyed it many years ago and after re-reading it, I enjoyed it again.
Amusing introduction to beloved wit September 23, 2007 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
Should be required reading for all folks of any age looking for an introduction to life in these United States, for those learning to overcome despair and disaster with humor and grace, for any and all learning the English language.
A fun Thurber book for all his fans September 18, 2007 Thurber is a great favorite of mine, and this was another fun book to read.
An old, old fashioned read. August 24, 2006 0 out of 6 found this review helpful
Take your mind back half a century and read these mildly amusing essays about life in the 1920s and 1930s. The style is so different from modern prose, but it is well worth the read.
