Product Description A skull lies half-hidden in the grass and leaves -- what type of animal did it come from? What did the animal eat? How did it behave? Skulls and Bones answers those questions and many others-allowing naturalists of all ages and skills to quickly identify mammal bones, understand their structure, and learn about the animal's lifestyle. With detailed line drawings, information on North America's most common land mammals, and tips on building a bone collection, Skulls and Bones can serve as the foundation for a fascinating new hobby or a useful reference for experienced collectors and biologists.

Tried and found lacking... August 19, 2008 I was disappointed with this book. Instead of an in depth analysis of animal skulls and bones, I found this to be a concise overview. A generous attempt to contribute to our knowledge base but tried and found lacking. If you are serious about animal tracking, wilderness survival or any other outdoor related fields you would be better suited to pick up Mark Elbroch's Animal Skulls: A Guide to North American Species. This book does contain some valuable information on identifying potential remains in various ground covers; valuable information for those of the naturalist tendency.
Outstanding reference material July 9, 2008 This book is an excellent reference book for students, collectors, and for law enforcement and forensic investigators. This book is a simple, concise, heavily illustrated guide for animal bone recognition. While it is usually easy for an experienced indiviual to distinguish human skeletal remains from animal, this book provides the ability to determine exactly what animal.
Cover might need a bit of work... May 21, 2007 0 out of 12 found this review helpful
I have not read the book. It could be a great book for all I know. I just wanted to point out that the cover has what looks like a chinese water deer skull in the top left corner. The last time I checked those were not found in North America.

I found this to be a superb reference in identifying random bones I've found in the woods. I *like* the simple line drawings--they show the basic shape of the bones nicely--you know exactly what it is you're looking for. I highly recommend it!
