A Good Basic Spelling Program September 30, 2008 This is a decent spelling program. I have to supplement with other practice outside the book, as there are only a few practice pages per list. My fifth grade son loves to do the extra stuff which includes "cloud spelling": use a piece of sketchbook paper, write each word in crayon or colored pencil, put the words in clouds and decorate each cloud, "crosswords"--use a blank sheet of paper so there are no restrictions on word length, put all words in a crossword puzzle, you can use colored pencils for this too, "word tree"--design a tree using your words for the trunk (going straight up the page and curving) and branches stemming out from the trunk. Once you do a few "art" spelling practices, you will think of many more. We also do traditional sentence writing with spelling words, and see-say-write lists. The book is a good foundation, but does need supplements.
Great homeschool 6th grade spelling book September 22, 2008 Difficulty level seems to be just about right for my sharp 6th grade daughter. Each chapter has exercises to hammer the words home that are, for the most part, somewhat fun, and not too long. Can easily do 15 min a day of spelling and have one test a week. Perfect!
I really like this. December 9, 2007 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I am homeschooling my daughter through middle school. We are in the middle of 7th grade. I really like this spelling program. It is mainly self-directed and includes vocabulary work. My daughter works through it and learns quickly because of its structure. She also actually likes the lesson lead-in stories! (I emphasize this because she's a discerning reader and at first fussed about reading something so simple.) I find I didn't use my teachers edition at all and bought just the student guide for 7th grade.
Spelling Workout series excellent for homeschoolers December 16, 2003 18 out of 19 found this review helpful
This is a great series. I found this series through the Well-trained Mind curriculum. Having had my daughter in school for five grades, I found most of the spelling workbooks she brought home relied heavily on the teacher's manuals, thus the workbooks contain nothing but exercises--no descriptions of the spelling rules. The Spelling Workout series allows enough explanation to allow the student to work on her own, with a minimal amount of help from the parent. The book is designed to build on itself, so the student will receive an entire, thorough, complete spelling course throughout one volume. Also, the sixth grade book is challenging enough without being overwhelming. This is a great resource.
