4 out of 5 stars Nice coverage of well known material   May 5, 2008

If you have looked at other books on how to better relationships, you won't find anything new. But if you are looking for a brief and readable introduction to the topic or a good review, you will find The Power of Charm to be a nice addition to your library.

3 out of 5 stars Useful advice, but doesn't (and should't) apply to all situation   May 5, 2008

I enjoyed reading the book, there is a lot of very good information. However, I doubt bringing out the charm offensive technique is appropriate in "all" situation. Suggestions like: "say as little as you can, listen more...", "give short and concise answer, and never offer advice...",..etc All good advice, basically you want to be perceived as "nice" all the time, even if you disagree with the other person - this makes you a good conversationalist. Imagine your working environment where everyone is always nice to each other, difficult decisions are gloss over and everyone is just plain charming.... What happen when the hard truth is needed ? what happen to being candor as a necessity in modern business environment ? Read Jack Welch's "Winning", in which he gave an example of how being a charming guy was not enough. In fact, it came across as phony when you are not being truthful. I tend to agree with that. And how does one develop long term meaningful friendship when everyone is so guarded all the time, not telling what they really think, no meaningful advice, or thinking all the time if the other person is telling to truth or just being "nice".

Being charming is great when you first meet someone, but to develop long term deep business/personal relationship, sometime you need the truth/honesty/candor with no sugar coating FAST - as in Jack's way.

2 out of 5 stars Lightweight   March 24, 2008

A light, cheesy, unsubstantial tour of the subject. From reading the author's list titles he seems to specialize in churning out formulaic self help books. A disappointment. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone except for the clueless bore.

4 out of 5 stars 39 chapters, 2 pages each   December 16, 2007

When most communication books are bloated magazine articles, this one is a magazine article with all the throat clearing drained out. Yes, much of what they say is standard wisdom but we all need a refresher and for those just getting into this area, it is a great intro: you learn more by listening then talking(with tips on how to do just that); body language pointers(the flick---move your attnetion from one eye to the other to show attention); compliment a lot(but be specific). There is also a good chapter on telephone communication. A welcome addition to the literature.

5 out of 5 stars Refreshing, insightful & entertaining read!   September 29, 2007

"The Power of Charm" shows you how to create "extraordinary rapport" that makes other people feel exceptional. Authors Brian Tracy and Ron Arden contend that "the most valuable commodity in the world isn't gold or diamonds-- it's charm."

The authors suggest that charm is a proven method for interacting with people that makes them open to you and receptive to your message. As a result, they're more likely to have personal and business relationships with you, and think of you in positive terms. Your reputation, how people think and act towards you is your most valuable personal and professional asset.

From start to finish, this book is entertaining and fun to read. The tone is always upbeat and optimistic -- not like etiquette or manners books that point fingers and shame you into compliance. You'll find yourself smiling and laughing as you read this book, especially the little personal stories and insights that the authors share. There are also some sly techniques for getting someone's attention (such as the "flick technique") that you probably haven't considered before. I found myself stepping back from the text, and thinking about my own communication and interaction style.

The book includes:

Five ways to boost another person's self-esteem
Four keys for effective listening
Why women are better listeners then men
Charm a woman by meeting her three core emotional needs
How to charm the socks off a man in conversation
Why looking into a man's eyes (& finding him valuable & important) is irresistible
How to change the way you act (by changing the way you think)8 signals for creating rapport (and much, much more)

I loved reading `The Power of Charm" and would recommend this book to anyone who wants to brush up on their interpersonal skills. If you really want to connect with people on a deeper level (and who doesn't?) this book is for you.

I'd also recommend this book for anyone who is shy, lonely, looking for love, suffers from a broken heart or failed relationships. The book would also be helpful to anyone who comes across as harsh, overbearing or insensitive. Whatever your disposition, the gentle and lighthearted nature of this book will win you over, and help you realize that change is possible, one small step at a time. Yes, this book has the power to transform your life-- but only if you read it and apply what it says.

The reviews posted here on Amazon don't give the book justice--and I don't understand why anyone would badmouth this gem of book. "The Power of Charm" is a heartwarming book that made me smile from ear to ear.
