5 out of 5 stars Magical trip to Shadowland   July 29, 2008
This remarkable book is simply magical. Being able to lie in bed, cuddled next to a trusted grownup and explore the magic of the dark is a memorable and thrilling experience for children aged 4 to infinity! Not only does the book tell a lyric tale of an imaginary battle between the raven and the jackal, it tells it with the most wonderful vehicle of shadows on the ceiling! The story reassures children that what goes "bump in the night," may be nothing more than your window shade!

2 out of 5 stars evil pictures   March 28, 2008

I like the construction and the idea, even the story, but there are 3 of the pages that are pretty evil looking. The jackle has sharp teeth and hair standing on the back of its neck. The page with the other animals in the forest following the crow, looks like ghost images. I read the reviews and some even said it was good for 3 year olds. Well, it makes me feel a little uncomfortable reading this to my 3 year old. If I had been able to see these pictures I definately would have not bought this particular shadow book for her.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing book with a wonderful story and a powerful lesson   December 31, 2007

This is a fantastic book. The design is amazing and kids love to read it. I've given this to quite a few children and they all love it. The story is really engaging and the lesson is great: often, what seems scary is just your imagination running away with you... so you can reign it in or let it run wild!

4 out of 5 stars unique book addresses night fears while casting shadows   January 11, 2004

This is a book that will make your little one positively anxious to go to bed! Spiral bound, you flip through the pages and use the attached flashlight to cast shadows on the wall as you read the accompanying stanza. The story tells of a ring held by the wicked crow, a jackal who plots and fights to claim the ring, and William -- who watches the battle and finally decides to act ....

The poem is not great but the story it tells, and the lesson of not fearing nighttime shadows, will please your little one. The concept is great and exciting for kids and adults, and the cut-outs are well done. I bought the book used and am glad I did so. While this is a fine book with heavy paper, cut-outs and spiral binding, and you can see why it's so expensive, it's still very expensive. This might be a good incentive to make your own shadow casting book or story.

5 out of 5 stars the power of imagination   March 31, 2001

My art teacher showed us this book in class. It was so wonderful to get a book that left something to the childs imagination. That is the problem I have with too much TV for children it does not allow them to create the minds eye. This book allows for that. Each page is well crafted and the addition of the flashlite keeps my child wanting to read tne book and use the light. He was fasinated when the images appeared on our wall. I think any child of age 4 years and up will appreciate this book and think that their parent is so cool. Which is what we really want isn't it?
