Gotta love the ghosty fluff. January 9, 2007 I will be honest. Mr. Yates' writing is clean and clear, but hardly impressive. The characters aren't the most dimensional you'll see. The story is cheesy.
But I don't care. I have read this book multiple times, and I'm sure I will read it again. By golly, Mr. Yates, but you can tell a fun story.
And what a concept! What's not to love? A supernatural romance, soul mates separated by a typo. It's a charming and hysterical concept that really makes for an entertaining read. The romance is fun and light-hearted, and you have to admire what personality the characters do show.
It's fun and original and romantic. True, the story is forced to drive itself, but it doesn't do a bad job.
"Everyone is a critic" May 13, 2003 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
It is often said, "Everyone is a critic". I may not be a writer, English was always my worst subject, but I do know what I like. This book, I have to say, was the most poorly written, badly conceived book I have ever read. I only hope that this is not the best example of the author's work. My sister in law gave me this book and by chapter twelve I wished she hadn't. The characters are so unconvincing, shallow, unreal, and unpredictable, that I couldn't decide if I wanted to finish the book or just trash it. My sister in-law insisted I finish the book so I did.The author (Dan Yates) tired too hard to convince us that the character Samantha (also know as Sam) really belonged with Jason (the ghost) and not her Fiancee Bruce, despite a typo in heaven that caused Jason to be born and die decades before. At the beginning of the book, Mr. Yates made Sam, a sweet and kind schoolteacher, who never drank any alcohol, that believed in woman's equality, and doing good for all mankind. I found it hard to believe that She would ever find a person like Bruce, who was a shallow, rude, domineering, male chauvinist pig, worthy of even dating let alone marrying. I understand that the author was trying to make us dislike Bruce so that we would want her to get together with Jason, but he over did it. It would be like having Marie Osmond engaged to Marilyn Manson. I just doesn't work at all. Also the author was so inconstant with the characters. Sam would from on chapter to the next completely change her attitude and personality. One minute she was nice person, the next she was an ungrateful brat. It became impossible to know her or cheer for her in anyway. At the end of chapter thirteen Jason saves Bruise's (Samantha's Fiancee) life, dispute Jason's desire for Sam to marry him. Instated of being a grateful (like most real people would) the very next chapter (day) Samantha tells him "I want you to lave me alone. .... I hope I never see you again!" Is this what a person tells a hero? Is this an example of thankfulness? Talk about having super mood swings. By then end of the book I almost thought Sam deserved to be unhappy and married to Bruce. All the characters were like this. There was so much wrong with this book that I couldn't recommend this book even for use as firewood. Do yourself a favor Skip this one and read something by "Orson Scott Card".
A very good Light hearted mystery, could not put it down. December 21, 1997 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Jason and Samantha are a very unlikly couple. What with Jason being dead and all. The original title "The Typo" explains more than published title. Due to a pre-birth arrangement betweeen Jason and Samantha, they were supposed to meet, and perhaps, court, marry and live happily ever after. However a single digit typo in Jason's birth record on the celestial computer caused him to be born too soon. Can the promises be fullfiled? Had to finish it before I could put it down. The second book "Just Call Me An Angle" is equally good and perhaps funnier. I can hardly wait to get started on the third book in the series "Angels to the Rescue".
