Product Description
In the mid 1970s following the colossal success of Conan the Barbarian, Roy Thomas helped expand the universe of Conan to showcase further stories and the talents of some of the comics industry's best with the equally popular Savage Sword of Conan magazine. Now, for the first time in over thirty years, these primal tales, featuring Robert E. Howard's most popular character, are available in this, the first in a series of massive trade paperbacks, collecting all Savage Sword Conan stories beginning with issue one. Included in this volume are tales by Roy Thomas, featuring the breathtaking art of such legends as Barry Windsor-Smith, John Buscema, Alfredo Alcala, Jim Starlin, Al Milgrom, Pablo Marcos, Walter Simonson and more. But that's not all. Also included in this tome are Conan's few appearances in the title Savage Tales - for the complete Conan collection!

4 out of 5 stars Nice trip down memory lane   October 4, 2008
Very glad they are doing this.. only complaint is that it's slightly shrunken making it difficult to see some of the detail. but still worth it

5 out of 5 stars If you think you might want it, you need it   October 2, 2008
Savage Sword volume one collects well over 500 pages of the beginning of the series. What makes this book different from any Marvel Essential is that these issues lose no quality, as they were meant to be black and white, and they old magazines aren't as easy to find as some of the Marvel superhero material. Really, something like a year's worth of perhaps Roy Thomas' greatest comic work (not to mention the art of masters like John Buscema, Barry Windsor-Smith, and Neal Adams)for less than $20 is a no-brainer to fans of Conan and the comic medium in general.

5 out of 5 stars Crom & Mitra !!!   September 27, 2008
Ok- I've been reading comics for over 3 decades and I've never really read much Conan. I decided to give this book a shot. I'm only a little over half way through- but I am totaly mesmerized by this series! I've already ordered Volume 2 and definitly plan to get all the volumes- and probably the Chronicles of Conan trades. First off- all the art is top of the line (John Buscema is one of my favorites). I've never been a big fan of Barry Windsor Smith- but his work here is breath taking! His attention to detail is simply amazing! And the stories are wonderful! I can't put this book down! And as for the complaints about the quality- the paper is better IMO than the Marvel Essential line that reprints classic issues in black & white- and these stories originaly appeared in B&W, so you're not losing anything. And finaly, with the low price and high page count (544) you really can't go wrong!

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT STORIES, GREAT ART, & SUPER VALUE!!   September 12, 2008
Back during the Seventies Roy Thomas kept the legacy alive of Conan and Robert E. Howard. The book is a tremendous value and a great treasure! All of the stories and art is outstanding. Roy Thomas and John Buscema are my favorite duo! If you can find Conan The Barbarian #275, scarce, which is the last comic (1993)in the series read the last page testimonial by Roy Thomas. He gives credit to his his team members during the years and the last paragraph goes like this "But--did I say "last"? Nay, the ultimate place on this illustrious list, be it written first or last, is that of Robert E. Howard, creator of Conan the Cimmerian, and who has been, as the contents page of Savage Sword has ever proclaimed, the "Soul and Inspiration" of everything we've tried to do. We're only sorry he hasn't been around to enjoy the fruits of his labors during the 1930s, and we'll never quite forgive him for taking himself away from us far too soon. With his talents like these behind him, is there any doubt that Conan, in one form or another, will be a Marvel mainstay for a long, long time to come? Thus, no tears-just a parting reminder: Conan The Barbarian in Savage Sword of Conan #218, by Mike Docherty and - Roy Thomas" Kudos to Roy Thomas. Job well done!! Conan is now in Dark Horse comics along with Solomon Kane, Kull, and a recent story Pigeons From Hell. Get on board at Dark Horse you'll be glad you did.

Must Reads: Conan Hardcover by Roy Thomas and Conan The Phenom, Blood & Thunder, The Life & Art of Robert E. Howard by Mark Finn, One Who Walked Alone by Novalyn Price, Conan The Dark Barbarian by Don Herron, The Last of the Trunk, Selected Letters of REH, All Weird Works by Paul Herman, all by Rob Roehm, The Never Ending Hunt - Wildside Press a complete Bibliography of REH by Paul Herman, The Black Stranger & Other American Takes that has the scariest story ever - Pigeons from Hell, Two-Gun Bob, Almuric, Solomon Kane, Bran Mac Morn, The Best of REH 1 & 2, Red Nails and Beyond The Black River, Lord of Samarcand, and all Conans by Marvel and Dark Horse.

5 out of 5 stars ...Before the Oceans Drank Atlantis   July 22, 2008
I have wanted, wished and waited for something like this to come along! I grew up in the 80's collecting 'Savage Sword'. To a mid-teen boy it was the best stuff ever!

This collection gives fans an opportunity to collect and read all of Conan's SS adventures from the beginning. The two downsides are:
1) The reduced picture size. (SSOC was larger as a magazine)
2) None of the "extras" were included. (Often there were Red Sonja, Kull or Solomon Kane stories at the end of each SS. It would have been great to keep those attached.

Overall though, I love this series and intend to buy all of them that they make!
