Product Description This gift set encompasses series one through five as well as all the specials and EC in one complete set. Tireless social climber Hyacinth Bucket (pronounced 'Bouquet' of course) puts her best foot forward and takes her bow in this wildly popular high-class comedy.Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: TELEVISION/SERIES & SEQUELS UPC: 794051202529
Amazon.com American sitcoms usually have a bland, likable central character who has to cope with obnoxious acquaintances--who usually provide most of the actual comedy. The British smartly put the comic personalities front and center, and Keeping Up Appearances has one of the best: The petty, pretentious, tyrannical Hyacinth Bucket (played by the impressive Patricia Routledge), a dowdy middle-class social climber with a piercing voice and an unshakable faith in herself. Upon learning that her mailman has seven children, she declares disapprovingly, "Quite an achievement when you have to be up so early." Whether she's scheming to invite a minor local celebrity to a garden party or scowling at an enormous dog left in her driveway, Hyacinth terrorizes all around her, particularly her long-suffering husband Richard (Clive Swift), who takes a small delight in subverting her efforts from time to time; her trembling neighbors Elizabeth and Emmett (Josephine Tewson and David Griffin), who scarcely leave their house lest they be invited in to coffee; and her sexually frustrated lower-class sisters Daisy and Rose (Judy Cornwell and Mary Millar) and Daisy's layabout husband Onslow (Geoffrey Hughes), who longs to be left in peace to eat chips and watch the races. Though Americans aren't as class-conscious as the Brits, snobbery is universal, and Keeping Up Appearances has developed an appreciative cult following on this side of the Atlantic. --Bret Fetzer

such a great show August 12, 2008 All I can say is put the kettle on and set your self in front of the tv. I absolutely love this show. Our dear Patricia Routledge does a great job as Hyacinth Bucket or should I say Bouquet ;). There are some moments which arn't funny but overall it's the most funniest show I've seen.
I definitely could watch this over and over again and still keep laughing at it.
It's worth the buy for any fan of british sitcoms!
High on Hyacinth August 8, 2008 Keeping Up Appearances isn't merely one of the all-time great British television comedies, but the dowager lady Hyacinth Bucket, as played by the peerless Patricia Routledge, is undoubtedly also one of the greatest comic figures in British history, a new breed of distaff Falstaff for our current gilded age.
When I watch Ms. Routledge do her formidable stuff here -- she knows she is playing one of the most indelible characters ever, and boy, does she go to town with it! -- I think of someone like W.C. Fields, another comic genius who had it all -- the timing, the physical comedy, the appearance, the voice, the vocabulary.
The rest of the cast is right there with her, but I must give special mention to Josephine Tewson as Hyacinth's nervous and long-suffering neighbor Elizabeth. Part of the wonder of this show is the way it exploits the power of repetition in comedy, and Tewson somehow manages to spill her coffee in a new and hilarious fashion every time Hyacinth invites her over.
From the way Hyacinth answers the phone to the dog that surprises her every time she visits her poor relations to the way she unfailingly describes her sister who married well -- somehow it all gets funnier through repetition in the course of this beautifully written series.
We all know a Hyacinth Bucket, and the first time you hear Hyacinth insist with a tone of gentle condescension that it's pronounced "Bouquet," you know that this show has captured the ferocious middle-class snob for all posterity, and with great hilarity.
Really, if you like great television comedy, this box is an essential purchase.
one of the best comedies of all time! June 30, 2008 if you like to laugh, this is the series for you. you will never laughed as much in your life.
Hours of Hyacinth Bucket, are you ready June 24, 2008 My wife and I have always enjoyed the British comedy "Keeping up Appearances". Our love of this show has gotten several other friends to also share our love. Hence, we had to buy more because of the ones we had given to our friends to enjoy.
excellent investment! June 9, 2008 I bought this box set brand new and still in factory seal. It was carefully delivered with no damage to it at all. All of the dvds work perfectly. The show is absolutely hilarious! This is Patricia Routledge at her very best! Highly recommended!
