People of the Sacred Oak August 17, 2008 Beautiful! I just finished reading this novel, and would highly recommend it to anyone with an interest in California history, or Native American history and culture, or anyone who just wants a great story. The author, Bill Hotchkiss did an incredible job of developing characters you can't help but love. The main character, a young female leader of the Maidu people during the California gold rush, embodies a natural spiritual wisdom beyond her young age, determination and strength of a warrior, and maternal loving kindness. Hotchkiss uses the language of the native people, and beautiful descriptions of the natural world to paint a vivid story of the clash between the cultures of the "drunken miners," and the native "People of the Sacred Oaks." I'm off to find the next Hotchkiss novel.
