Good, but don't use it alone! January 16, 2008 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
This is a fairly large book with great plates in the back with detailed anatomy drawings. However, more than half of the book is text of which the sections don't even cover an entire page. It would have been helpful to include some illustrations WITH the text to make points clearer.
Also, the plates themselves are of fairly poor printing quality. The image of a wolf on the front of the book is crisp and clear, while the actual plate inside is far too dark. The point of the drawing is to illustrate the direction of the fur. One can somewhat discern this from the plate, but not NEARLY as well as on the cover. This is true of most of the plates, as if they were originally in color and they were badly copied on a xerox. Some touching up in a graphics program would have done wonders.
Basically, it's a decent guide with some great information in the text, but it is lacking in a few ways. I bought it along with two other anatomy books and I think it is best to use them all together rather than using a single guide.
Not a very useful book for wildlife artists January 10, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I purchased this book based on the review above and the cover art. I was disappointed when I opened the book to find that the majority of the information in the book is presented in text format and is not very useful to me as an artist's reference. Some of the plates are interesting but I would not recommend buying this book if you are looking for an artist's animal anatomy guide.

Ernest Thompson-Seton was the writer and illustrator of numerous famous stories of animals in the old west. He has, in this volume, produced an invaluable reference work for anyone interested in producing accurate artistic representations of animals. The drawings are finely detailed and both drawings and text present a wealth of useful information for any student of animal anatomy. Several species are 'dissected' in great detail, including equines, canines, felines, and others both wild and domestic. No detail is overlooked, including the way the hair lies on the animal and various diagrams give proportional values for many species. This is an affordable edition of a classic. If you want to draw or paint animals you could ask for no better instructions. Every page brims with Mr. Thompson-Seton's love for and knowledge of his subject.
