5 out of 5 stars Must Read!! Especially for Block fans!   September 18, 2008
I was mesmerized by this book! I read it straight through without putting it down. Francesca's way with words is amazing. I connected most with the story of Sylvie and Ben, (a couple who's love life is on the rocks). Each character was unique and had a life of their own. This erotica is fluid and poetic and vibrant. My only moment of dissapointment was when it was over!

3 out of 5 stars A book about healing through sex.... Not for kids!   October 30, 2007
I bought this book online because for years it was out of print or most stores didnt have it. When I got it I was really let down by how small the book was....literally a little bigger then a deck of cards and not as thick!!! I think if Block had gone farther into the characters this long awaited let-down would have been better. But the way its written it makes one feel as though she had a beautiful thought in her head and tried to write it while day-dreaming...thus only part of a short story stands out. How can one do PART of a short story??! I love the way Block writes and Ive never been disappointed in her other books. I highly recommend the weetzie bat series.

5 out of 5 stars Where fantasy is reality   January 13, 2007

In these erotic stories, magic, fantasy, and otherworldy beings come to life in the harsh reality of adulthood, and nothing about it feels unusual. That is the magic of Francesca Lia Block. She has been one of my favorite authors for many years.
If you can suspend your disbelief, you will find some gorgeous writing and enchanting stories. The oddly-named characters will stay with you long after you read the last word. You will feel suddenly hopeful and elated, despite yourself.
This is one of my favorite collections of erotica. "Mer" is a well-loved story (featured in many erotica collections), but all of these tales are utterly fantastic. At 25, I am no longer a child, but somehow, reading Block's writing always restores that wide-eyed wonder of youth, if only for a little while.

4 out of 5 stars Dear Francesca, make me more books like this, but work harder on them.   August 27, 2006

This collection is about the transformative power of sex. The stories are lightly interwoven -- characters generally appear in multiple tales, linking them loosely together. There's a touch of magical realism to many of the stories, and a nice range of emotional modes: joy, but also a lot of sadness, and healing through sexual expression.

Much as I adore this collection, it's not Block's best work. The book seems a little rushed, and the stories could have made a much more coherent whole than they did. Some individual stories could also have used polishing. The book is also quite badly copyedited, which is distracting.

Overall, however, as someone who believes sexuality and spirituality are inextricably intertwined, this book was VERY much to my taste -- explicit while still having sophisticated literary style, good characters, and intense emotions.

5 out of 5 stars A Magical Fairytale Tapestry Of Love, Healing And Sex   June 22, 2006
As usual, and unlike a few others, I thoroughly enjoyed this book, another issuance from the brilliant Miss Block...

I thought the stories contained in "Nymph" were magical and complex, full of lush detail where it was needed and left to the imagination when it allowed... Leaving the reader engrossed in a lovely fairytale land of healing love and healing sex... This is a book full of beautiful characters who's lives are a rich tapestry of passion, pain, love and struggle.

I enjoyed "Mer" in a thousand different ways, and found "Plum" to be enchanting. While it's true that I liked some of her short tales more than some of the others, that didn't diminish the book as a whole for me in the least. I loved the way she intertwined each character and their story to the next and the way each one's tale unraveled in a slow, sensual dance.

Certainly this isn't the typical book, but if you've managed to run across it with interest in enjoying it, then you're most likely not the typical reader... And I don't think you'll be disappointed...
