Editorial Reviews:

Product Description

When Ralph Helfer, now one of Hollywood's top animal behaviorists, first began working, he was shocked by the cruelty that was accepted practice in the field. He firmly believed in "affection training" -- that love, not fear, should be the basis of any animal's development, even when dealing with the most dangerous of creatures. Then Zamba came into his life -- an adorable four-month-old lion cub that went on to prove Helfer's theories resoundingly correct.

Over the next eighteen years, Zamba would thrive and grow, and go on to star in numerous motion pictures and television shows -- all the while developing a deep and powerful bond of love and affection with the man who raised him. By turns astonishing, hilarious, and poignant, Zamba is not only the unforgettable story of the relationship that Helfer would come to consider one of the most important in his life but also that of the amazing career and adventures of the greatest lion in the world.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful! Could not put it down!!!!   March 10, 2008

I had not read a book in quite sometime and a friend told me about Zamba. We run a nonprofit rescue for big cats such as Lions, Tigers, Bobcats, Mountain Lions, etc. I took the book with me on a recent trip to California to rescue 6 cats. I thought it would keep me occupied during the long drive. It was such a wonderfull story that I could not put it down and read the entire book in the first day of our trip!! I immediately went to Amazon.com and ordered two more books by this author. I can't wait to receive them and start reading!!!

5 out of 5 stars wild and wonderful   February 8, 2008

Because of my older brother (wild animal trainer), I was able to meet and greet some of natures most beautiful wild animals. I was not, however, as fortunate as Mr. Helfer to live his dream of long-term association with the wild ones. This is a beautiful story, well written and detailed and will give even an ignorant the insight into these majestic creatures and how truly lucky we are to share their planet. Would that all who read would understand how love and compassion are at least a baby step towards making the world a better place for man and beast.

What a treasure this book is, what an account, what a Lion! This sort of tale is not possible at all anymore and do not support in any way the keeping of exotic pets or animals in "entertainment" but loved reading about Zamba!

4 out of 5 stars Zamba; The World's Greatest Lion   December 26, 2007

This is a remarkable story of a man and a lion. The man is an animal trainer who wished to train animals by love and affection; not by fear. He got his chance to do so with a motherless young cub who was flown from Africa by friends and bonded instantly with the trainer. For the next 16 years man and lion lived together intimately, even sharing the same (custom-built) bed. The story is unique and very touching. I liked it so much that I bought four copies to share with friends and relatives at Christmas.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Reading !!   November 19, 2007

This book is excellent. Zamba was truly awesome, a real wonder. However, I warn you, you'll weep at the end. A book very well written. Worth your time to read. I intend to read "Modoc" next, about this guy and and his "affection-trained" elephant.
