Touching and sweet , but not saccharine July 19, 2006 This is a sweet story with simple, colorful, appealing illustrations. A young island boy helps his grandfather at a bird hospital. They rescue an injured baby flamingo, to whom the boy gets very attached. However, he must accept letting the bird go when it has healed - a bittersweet life lesson! Extra-appealing for showing a boy as a kind nurturer of animals. Can't recommend this one highly enough!

Island Baby is a fantastic children's book. It is a sweet, endearing tale of caring, nurturing, love, separation and letting go. A beautiful example of respect and caring for animals. A great separation tale for children going off to school for the first time. A definite must for any early childhood library...if only it were easier to find!
