Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Too many blurred images.   December 17, 2004
Essentially, this is a coffee table picture book and my problem is with the photographs.

The first 12 pages of the book comprise a single chapter which has no title. This is an overview of the subject with headings such as; Welcome to The Arctic, Baleen Whales, Toothed Whales, Beaked Whales, Unicorn of the Arctic, Whaling, Mass Strandings and so forth. So far there are no photographs and the paper used for this text is of a marked inferior quality to the remainder of the book which is all full page glossy photographs - right up to page 127 where the book ends.

Yes, some of the images are quite stunning - especially those of the Great Whales at the beginning. But this is a book which is wholly reliant on images over information and far too many photographs are not as pin-sharp as they should be. Unfortunately, this includes the cover photograph.

I suspect this will put a lot of people off the book - which could so easily have been an excellent pictorial essay.
