Well! This second book in Erin McCarthy's humorous contemporary vampire romance series certainly lived up to the promise of its predecessor, High Stakes. In fact, I liked it even better.
This one features vampire Seamus Fox, the uptight campaign manager for vampire president Ethan, the hero from High Stakes. He's paired with Cara Kim--a virgin stripper.
Just the characters themselves would be enough to drive an entertaining story, but vampire politics are really cut-throat (heh), which ups the stakes (heh heh) for everybody.
Sorry about that--couldn't resist.
Anyway. Cara gets mortally injured; Seamus feels responsible, so he turns her. And when she has trouble dealing with vampire life and drinking blood, he tries to make things easier for her, breaking a lot of vampire laws to do so... a scandal in the making, especially at such a critical time in the campaign.
So he also tries to keep her a secret, and moves her into his hotel suite along with her dogs. And all the while, he's trying to keep his hands off her and keep himself in denial that he's falling in love. It is, after all, an unfamiliar emotion for him, since the last time he had a relationship with a woman (that ended disastrously, natch) was 200 years ago.
Cara, meanwhile, chafes at the restrictions. She realizes she's falling in love with Seamus, but she's no happier than he is, because she believes it's one-sided.
Bit the Jackpot is an entertaining story about characters I could really care about. We also get more of the secondary characters from the first book, including Brittany and Corbin, whose story is in Bled Dry. I'm looking forward to it.

A friend gave me the first book of this series. I immediately went online to complete the set.

What's not to love about any book in this series? Nothing! There's vampire politics, angst, and sex. How can you go wrong, especially when it's fuuny as all get out. Read the whole series. Worth every penny paid!

I love Erin McCarthy books. Her books are funny and well written and she writes really good love scenes that are hot and sexy. She makes the characters likable with little quirks in their personalities to make you feel like they're real people. Seamus is adorable and sexy and Cara is not as quirky but I liked her anyway. It was fun to revisit Ethan and Alexis and some of the other characters. It's a quick read and will make you smile in spots and tingly in others. Highly recommended...plus any of Erin McCarthy's other books.

Unfortunately for my fellow travelers, this was not a wise book selection.
In the interminable hour of our commute I flicked, riffled, and huffed my way through this book, as carelessly as one can with a library book one doesn't desire to be lumbered with if rendered unreadable!
As author takes another stab at popular genre and renders readers minds to mush. From the inaccuracies on the back blurb to the inadequacies of the text, with this novel Erin McCarthy never fails to disappoint.
Irishman and ancient vampire Fox lusts after striptease dancer Kim, glimpsing her gyrations at a seedy Vegas club.
A few pages in, during a mugging he saves her life by turning her into a vampire - McCarthy seems to have her characters celebrating their undead status, with Fox nodding to "soul in torment" by an oft mentioned regret from his past, but McCarthy's depiction rings shallow as a brook.
Stuck with a limpet like vampire Kelsey, Fox dodges death and tangles with minions of the big bad vampire until all is peaceably resolved in a passe ending.
It's possible, being Wednesday (middle of the working week) I was predisposed to dislike the book, but even so - 20 pages in any predisposition should become irrelevant as the story grips you. I first read & enjoyed Heiress For Hire.
If vamp chick-lit is your thing, why not try the humorous and irreverent Happy Hour at Casa Dracula (Casa Dracula Series, Book 1)by Marta Acosta, which surprised me with it's addictiveness or the never ending & always entertaining adventures of Undead and Unwed, Mary Janice Davidson's' most prolific creation.
