Wonderful! November 17, 2001 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
I really did enjoy this book. I read it from cover to cover in one sitting. My absolute love for the BBC adaptation of P&P was further fuelled by the wonderful book. It really let us in behind the scenes of such a great production with the great pictures. It would certainly have been even better if they had included a thorough interview, as they did with Colin Firth, with other cast members. Four stars for a wonderful book!
All I needed to know about BBC's P&P, I learned it from... September 7, 2001 5 out of 7 found this review helpful
If you own BBC's P&P on video/dvd and see it again and again without getting ever tired, this book can be the answer to all your curiosities. Fun-fun guidebook with lots of pictures and resources.
What can I say that has not been said? August 18, 2001 16 out of 18 found this review helpful
This is a slim little volume, and you might be slightly disappointed when it arrives. But it is packed with information (in small type) and with fascinating pictures and snippets of information. Want to know how the actors and actresses were chosen and what problems they had with Regency English? This is the book. Want to know how the costume designers found the materials to make those lovely dresses, and where they got their inspiration? Again, this is the book. Want to know how to make a Regency costume? Sorry, this book cannot help. But you can get pointers by reading the pages on costume design. If you are a fan of Colin Firth and/or Jennifer Ehle, or simply love the BBC-A&E production of Pride and Prejudice (1995), you should obtain this book. Just reading this book once gives you so much information about the series, and a better understanding of how this production came about. Of course, you might want to keep the book instead of passing it on to a friend (sorry, Candace!). My only regrets are a) that I did not order this book earlier, and b) that I did not order two copies of this book while Amazon was having its free shipping deal. Candace will get her copy later.
A Must-Have For A&E P&P Fanatics August 15, 2001 54 out of 57 found this review helpful
If you own the video of A&E's Pride & Prejudice, and practically have it memorized, this is the book for you. A fascinating description of how this masterpiece was brought to life and an in-depth look at all the work that goes into producing a six hour "film". I particularly enjoyed the explanations of the details involved in the ball scenes. There's a first rate interview with Colin Firth and tons of great photographs. The only reason I'm not giving this book 5 stars is, for my money, they should have included more interviews with the cast. Otherwise, it's a fine book and will be enjoyed by anyone who loved the production.
Much better than I had envisioned May 31, 2001 10 out of 11 found this review helpful
Since I have become completely and uncharacteristically obsessed with this movie, I decided to order this book even though I was afraid it may take the magic out of the A&E production by showing the background reality and details of making the film. But I have found that this is not the case. The book gives really good insights into the characters, especically Mr. Darcy, and I found it facinating to read about the hidden motivations and feelings as interpreted by Colin Firth and especially, Andrew Davies, the screenwriter. Really good. But my plea to the producers - please, please do a sequel even though I know you'll not have Jane Austen's help. If you read the reviews under the video section you know that you have a built-in audience who would be willing to pay a lot to see more of this beautiful production.
