4 out of 5 stars more interview than serious sluething   March 7, 2004

I would have given this book 3 stars, but I must admit I was quite curious to find out the killer's identity.

I love a good mystery, but my problem with this book (& I am not a devoted Agatha Christie fan, prior to this I read a book of her short stories, and don't feel terribly inclined to read anymore of her work) is that after the murder takes place, the sluething is done by merely interviewing the cast of character's again & again- there wasn't any suspenseful poking around, or edge of the seat moments where you're sure the inspector is going to get caught uncovering clues- it was just a bunch of conversations. I practically needed a chart to keep track of all of the character's.

So, if you like your mysteries filled with drawing room chatter & not a lot of physical movement/uncovering- I highly recommend this- if you like more suspense, turn to Ruth Rendell or Patricia Carlon.

I recently read "Death on the Nile", by Agatha Christie, and the book left me astonished. The ingenious crafting of murder was impressive and the end, as usual, in her books, a complete mystery. It was a pleasure from the beginning to the end. A story of intrigue and romance, of money and passion, and of course, of murder had me reading it in one sittting. Linnet Ridgeway, a beautiful and very wealthy heiress, has everything. And what she doesn't have she obtains. Her best friend, Jackie De Belleforte longs for everything Linnet has. And when she introduces her new fiance Simon to Linnet, Linnet takes that too. Simon and Linnet are married and go on a honeymoon to Egypt, only to find Jackie following them wherever they go. They are quite displeased with the way she demonstrates her anger. But as a number of mysterious accidents begin to happen, the famous detective Hercule Poirot is ready for them. One night, Linnet is murdered, and the most likely person, Jackie, has an alibi confirmed by five people. But who could have killed Linnet? And why? That I leave to the eager readers, but I extremely enjoyed this, and as all Christie books, this is a true mystery. I am glad I read this, and it is very interesting. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys mysteries.

5 out of 5 stars Hercule Poirot strikes again!   October 23, 2003
Jacqueline de Bellefort calls on her old friend Linnet Ridgway to tell her that she is engaged to marry a man named Simon Doyle. Linnet seems to be happy for her friend, but she soon meets Simon and woos him away from Jackie. Simon and Linnet marry and go on a honeymoon to Egypt, but they are stalked by Jackie wherever they go. Soon Linnet is killed and Jackie is an obvious suspect. She has an airtight alibi, and Hercule Poirot has his hands full, trying to find the real killer. There are other suspects, as Linnet was a very wealthy woman and there are many who would like to get their hands on her fortune. Poirot works his magic and, by keen observation and a very logical mind, he is able to unravel the mystery. This is a beautifully constructed book and is Agatha Christie at her finest.

4 out of 5 stars Christe Little   September 29, 2003

Death on the Nile was not Christe's finest work, or her most well crafted. The murder itself was wonderfully done, but the method in which the aforesaid murder was rather unlikely. The engineering of such a plan as the murder(s) carried out was not something a normal person, or, for that matter, most any person would be able to do effectively. Few, if any, human beings would have the mental stamina necessary to carry out murders. Several things were done by the murderer(s) that normal human beings are simply not capable of. I cannot give examples here without breaking to the reader the end of the novel, but I will say that such events as take place in the novel are hardly likely in the real world.

4 out of 5 stars Death on the Nile   January 23, 2003

Are you are in the mood for a thrilling book that you won't want to put down? Then I strongly recommend Death on the Nile, written by Agatha Christie, the best-selling author for mysteries. It was one of the most suspenseful stories I have ever read.
Linnet Ridgeway, the victim, is wealthy, young, and beautiful. She is used to having her way, so when she falls in love with her best friend Jackie's fiance (named Simon), trouble is in the air. Simon soon realizes that he loves Linnet more than Jackie, and marries her instead.
On their honeymoon, a cruise on the Nile, Jackie is on board, and ready for revenge. So when Linnet is found dead in her bed one morning, it is obvious who did it. But it was impossible for Jackie to have killed her, since she had people with her the entire night. Hercule Poirot, the detective, has to find the answers to several questions to solve this mystery. Did an attempted murder that occurred earlier have anything to do with this one? Why did the murderer throw something overboard? Why is Linnet's business guardian so secretive about the forms he wants her to sign? Do Linnet's missing pearls have anything to do with it? He must use his intelligence, intuition, and interviewing skills to solve the crime. Can he prove who did it?
This book was a little slow-moving before the murder was committed, but I liked it because of its challenging reading level, the exciting storyline, and the surprise ending.
