5 out of 5 stars Beautiful narration - nice sound quality mp3 @ 128 Kbs   February 12, 2008

What a blessing it is to be the first to write a review for this amazing audio Bible! Alexander Scourby, who I believe was a British Shakespearian actor at some point, was the first to read the entire Old Testament and New Testament aloud for audio transcription. Legend has it that Scourby attempted this task as an exercise in elocution. He wasn't born again when he started the project, but I heard that he gave a profession of faith before he finished his beautiful and passionate narration of the most important book given to humanity. Being blind, I have found this narration valuable beyond measure! My first copy of this marvelous narration came on 62 CDs! When I discovered the AMG Publishers mp3 Bible, I was skeptical. Is it possible to have the entire Bible on 6 CDs? Well, the Spirit led me to get the AMG version. There is no software. When loaded on a PC, you get folders, one folder per Bible book. For example, if one opens the Genesis folder, there is a collection of 50 mp3 files representing each of the 50 chapters in the book. The mp3 files play at 128 Kbs, which is better than I expected and is more than adequate for good smooth voice reproduction. The sound at times is virtually indistinguishable from analog. All of the folders and files are tagged with the book titles and chapter numbers. For portable use, currently I am using a SONY Walkman CD player. The SONY Walkmans are wonderful in that they display the mp3 file names and when the device is shut off, it will pick up from the exact place you left off with when the player is started back up. I know, I need to get with the program and get a real mp3 player with no moving parts. The AMG Publishers Scourby mp3 Bible is a great value. But again, how can one put a dollar value on God's Holy Bible! The Old Testament is on the first 5 CDs and the New Testament is on 1 CD. *Update - I discovered that the New Testament on the 6th CD is coded at 80 Kbs. Not a big deal, but, these files have the usual distortion typical of mp3 files recorded at too low a bit rate. They still sound pretty good and detracts little from the joy of listening to such a fine narration. Reading some of the Old Testament books like Leviticus, Deuteronomy, and Numbers can be an arduous task to say the least. Hearing a truly great narrator like Alexander read those books masterfully helps one understand and appreciate these often overlooked parts of God's Word. The packaging is no frills; just a box with 6 CDs in paper sleeves. The CD labels are green and white and pleasing to the eyes.
