Wonderful Resource! August 8, 2008 Galbraith's book, "Adult Learning Methods" is a densely packed book, well researched and annotated, as expected from an academic book. What may not be expected is its accessibility. Some things that worked particularly well for me are: * Summaries from which you can refer back to chapter information * Inclusion of instruments for your personal philosophical orientation and teaching style * Interesting questions about "what we have always known" * An incredible amount of information with pros and cons for teaching tools and methods and applications * A segment on communities in cyberspace
A "must" for those of us who want a strong research base with an applications orientation. In the training or educational world I consider this an essential resource. Adult Learning Methods: A Guide for Effective Instruction
An Effective Guide to Effective Instruction May 29, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This was the required text for my Adult Learning Theory course as part of my M.Ed. in adult education degree program. In my opinion, they couldn't have picked a better compilation of experts.
Outstanding Collection April 28, 2008 For many of us, adapting our pedagogy from a focus on traditional students to a focus on adult learners is a challenge. I found this collection of essays to be an outstanding foundation for understanding how and why we face challenges with adult students. I also got a lot out of the specific practices that make up the second half of the book. I highly recommend the book to those who have not been trained in this form of pedagogy, but who desire to adapt to become a better instructor.
Good text April 27, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is an excellent text for adult education. I just started working on my MEd, and this book covers theory very well, while keeping the subject matter interesting. Chapters are of decent, readable length and are well annotated by both classic and contemporary education specialists.
A 'must-read' for all adult educators October 20, 2005 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
Being fairly new to the community of adult educators, I find myself continually searching for works that might help me to become a more effective facilitator. In this regard, Galbraith has quickly evolved into one of my favorite authors/editors in the field of adult learning. I found this book to be very practitioner-oriented, scholarly yet not over-technical and well researched. I highly recommend this book to anyone who desires to develop a greater understanding of adult learners and instructional strategies that are, indeed, effective.
