5 out of 5 stars heartwarming story   September 9, 2006

I visited the pacific north west recently and picked up this book. It is a wonderful coming of age story with an interesting look into marine life and the environment. I found it interesting and had a hard time putting it down.

5 out of 5 stars A glorious book   August 30, 2006

If this book were simply an exuberant paean to Puget Sound, that would be plenty. Lynch's descriptions of the bay and its deeply fascinating inhabitants (and startling visitors) are drenched in gorgeousness. In fact, it's a story, too, and its protagonist Miles O'Malley is as irresistable and intriguing as any character I've encountered in a very long time. With his sharp, searching eyes, his certain but conflicted love for his parents, his friends, the girl next door, his reverence for mystery, he's every bit as vast and pure and surprising and complicated as the tidewater flats he explores and in which he exalts. I didn't just want to know him. I wanted to be him.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!   August 25, 2006

This is one of the best coming-of-age books I've read in years. Plus, being a huge fan of Rachel Carson, it's wonderful to see Lynch link his character's interest - and extensive knowledge - on marine life with a woman who wrote about the oceans with reverence and poetry. It'll make a great movie.

5 out of 5 stars book   August 10, 2006
This is a well written book. The setting for the book is the Olympia area -- where I'm from. I read the book and decided to order two paperback copies as gifts.

5 out of 5 stars What a wonderful story!!!   July 29, 2006

Okay, I have lived in the Olympia area for several years and I grew up near the tide flats of Samish Island. I have done my share of exploring but I read The Highest Tide and I can't wait to go explore the area noted in the book! (I hate mud too) This was a charming, I couldn't stand to put the book down story! I really did not want it to end. Miles was such a great character and so was Phelps. I was on pins and needles when Phelps got stuck in the mud, we have that mud across the street.
This book is a must read for all, I gave a copy to my 96 year old Gramma and she loved it!
Good work!!!!!!!!!!
