1 out of 5 stars Stick to the story   June 7, 2008

I wish Trout could finish one story without interjecting so many side stories. I found the book boring and repeatedly wished he would just finish one story before sticking other totally unrelated ones in the middle.

5 out of 5 stars Informative and entertaining   May 28, 2008
I've read books by doctors that could have doubled as a hypnotic; they were boring and dull. This book by Dr. Trout is a notable exception to the rule.He shows extraordinary writing ability, weaving similes and metaphors throughout the text with the skill of a professional writer, a talented professional writer. Contrary to some reviews, I don't think that Trout is making fun of his pet owners, he is merely pointing out the humor is some otherwise serious situations involving animal medical treatment. I got the feeling that Dr.Trout is, if anything, a true friend of all animals. I especially appreciated his discussions of how people relate to their animals. Trout has the ability to both entertain, as well as inform. Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys good reading.

5 out of 5 stars Wish it was longer   May 27, 2008
The is the first time I've written a review and it's because this is such a damn good book.

Vet visits can be such a stressful time for both financial and emotional reasons. This book has given me such a better understanding of what's happening behind the scenes as well as the multitude of issues a veterinarian is juggling. This book will make your future vet visits something to look forward too or at least much less stressful. (And as a greyhound owner the story of "Fly" was priceless.)

If you love the real-life medical stories I guarantee you'll love this. Plenty of medical detail but not a text. Hilarious stories about a variety of animals. My only criticism is that the damn thing ended.

Very interesting view of a day in the life of a vet. Seemed like a very long day, but if he could take it so could I.

5 out of 5 stars This should be required reading for people owned by pets...   May 23, 2008

Only those that work in the veterinary field know the joys and agony that can happen numerous times in a single day, if not in a single minute. We may have to euthanize an elderly patient that we all care deeply and are heartbroken at their passing then turn around and vaccinate a new puppy or kitten for someone and act like we are so happy to see them! Pet owners really don't have a clue. There is no wonder that those in the veterinary fields have a suicide rate that is 4 times the national norm. Think about that for a second....

Those of us that do this stuff day in and day out really wish that "normal people" had even slightest clue as to what we do, every day. Many of us have "warped" senses of humor that we wield like a sword to protect ourselves from running, screaming down the street, never to be seen again.

Dr. Nick Trout does an excellent job of trying to get all of these things across to the masses. We are going to feature his book in our new newsletter because his memoirs really tell it like it happens.

This is one of the best books on the subject and again, it should be required reading for anyone that shares their lives with animals.
