5 out of 5 stars Lost 50 lbs with this and kept it off for five years running   May 13, 2008

Positives: delicious, nutritious food. Never felt hungry through a year of using the recipes and menus. That was five years ago and 50 pounds ago. The 50 have stayed off because I/we still eat the same way, and always will. Negatives: preparation of many recipes takes a LOT of time and access to a few ingredients that are hard to find in a small town grocery store. This would be a TERRIFIC diet if only one had someone to prepare all this food for you. Still the best diet out there; it works and it changes the way you will eat and think about food for the rest of your life.

3 out of 5 stars purchased based on experience with the South Beach Diet   February 14, 2008
I purchased this book for a friend who had bypass surgery. I had previously read South Beach Diet and tried it out. I thought it was extremely informative and sensible. It definitely improved my weight and my overall health. I hope this book will help my friend make some needed changes in his diet and life style.

4 out of 5 stars SOUTH BEACH DIET & HEART HEALTH BOOK   January 28, 2008
I HAVE NOT READ THROUGH THE ENTIRE BOOK YET, BUT HAVE MOST, IF NOT ALL, DR. AGASTON'S BOOKS ON SOUTH BEACH DIET & HAVE STUDIED NUTRITION OVER THE YEARS (ALOT) IT'S GREAT INFORMATION & IT SEEMS THE ONLY WAY TO DIET IS THROUGH NORMAL EATING WITH GOOD CARBS & LOW GI FOODS ADDING LOW FAT DAIRY (OR NONFAT) PLUS FRUITS, VEGGIES & WHOLE GRAINS PLUS SMALL AMOUNTS OF NUTS, SEEDS & LEGUMES. SO I AGREE WITH IT - NOW IF I COULD ONLY STICK TO IT FULL-TIME! I THINK IT'S ON TARGET INFORMATION & WOULD RECOMMEND THIS BOOK. THANKS - STILL TRYING TO 'REVERSE'.

4 out of 5 stars Almost complete   January 2, 2008
A very good book, almost excellent. It's nearly comprehensive and a great introduction for the middle-aged man to understand the cumulative negative implications of declining fitness and increasing inactivity. It's shortfalls are the limited examples of day-to-day sample menu's and the advantages of non-processed foods. Additionally, the chapter on exercising is a bit lame in this day of mens health, and widely distributed fitness, etc. Finally chapter summaries would help. Otherwise, well worth the investment and the read. For me, this book has been a great help for me to understand how to make an important mid-life change in direction to improve not only the quality of my life but also my longevity.

5 out of 5 stars A guide to stay away from the cardiac surgeon   October 31, 2007

Dr. Agatston book is a great story about the limitations of the current medical system, with emphasis on how heart disease is treated in the USA, and how we, collectively, could do a better job by improving the early diagnosis of heart disease. It encourages people to develop simple habits and follow treatment options that reduce the number of surgical interventions, as well as the number of cardiac events and deaths. It gives its readers the knowledge and tools to get going with these solutions. The typical doctor is not well prepared to diagnose heart disease early enough. Patients are well rewarded when they are proactive in prevention methods. Hospitals and many cardiologists often intervene to save patients when their lives are already compromised, but have no financial incentive to truly emphasize early prevention for the rest. Dr. Agatston found one: Educate the public by selling books. Given that heart disease is the number one killer, this one is worth it.
