If you have ever read the Material World by Peter Menzel and loved it than you need to buy this book. Each page is filled with photos and interesting tidbits about the individuals being showcased. I have read it over and over, and it's truely a masterpiece. Definately worth the price.

Marvelous group of photos and information on other cultures. It is a reasonably good cookbook too. The statistics on longeivity and diet are also interesting. Perhaps the best part is showing children how people differ in their most basic wants, when they are met, and how cultures actually overlap with products made in, sold in, the U.S. showing up on other tables in other lands. Margaret Thatcher said, to paraphrase, that she learned about the world of economics in her father's store. Well, this is a composit picture of the world's grocery store and nothing beats good pictures except actually going there.

5 out of 5 stars AN IMPORTANT BOOK   January 9, 2007

I bought this book for a friend who is a globally minded chef, and I ended up reading it from cover to cover before I gave it to her. This book provides an important and fascinating look at the diversity of flavors and nutrition that families around the world consume in their normal weekly diets. Each chapter is a family that the reader comes to know by name and lifesytle making the connection of our humanity so honestly close. Subjects such as malnutrition, obesity, the effects of urbanization and fast food, are also discussed in such a way that is eye opening and comprehendable when looking at them from this global perspective. Hungry Planet is beautifully presented equally by photographs and text.

An excellent example of what my grandmother used to say......you are what you eat. wonderful insight on how the rest of the world eats and how disappointing our western diets have become.

If you enjoy the Material World series, you will love this book. It is a fantastic look at something that we all share, food, and how it can be so different around the world. Like traveling without leaving your couch.
