Kaufman Field Guide to Birds of North America November 4, 2006 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is a great companion book to the Sibley Guide. It offers different images and more information on each species for comparison. I have several other books by the same author and recommend him highly.
An excellent field guide November 2, 2006 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
This field guide from Kenn Kaufman, Birds of North America, was published in 2000. It has 384 pages. What makes this field guide distinctive in comparison with other photographic field guides is its utilization of photographs that have been digitally edited in order to facilitate the proper identification of its subjects. The taxonomic ordering of the birds is not adhered to, either; for comparison, similar birds are placed together. This field guide is set up in a practical manner, because while the text and range maps are situated on the left page, the birds are displayed on the right page. The text that is on the left page provides descriptive information on field marks, behavior, habitat, and vocalizations; in addition, the common and scientific names of the birds are stated. Along with the photographs that are displayed on the right page, length and field mark pointers are included. The photographs show varying plumages, also. This field guide includes a pictoral table of contents, a quick key to the range maps, a birding basics section, a section on bird topography and field marks (with corresponding illustrations that point out the parts of a bird), a section that deals with the classification and naming of birds, and an index of the birds--arranged by the common English name. This index can also serve as a life list of the birds that you have identified, since there is a box next to each type of bird that can be checkmarked. There is a color key system that is included in order to make it simple to find the correct group of birds, too. This field guide does not stay on the bookshelf whenever I go birding. Birds of North America is a productive, excellent, and recommendable field guide from Kaufman.
Kaufman Field Guide to Birds - Excellent July 10, 2006 This field guide is a clear, concise, easy to read manual that contributes to the enjoyment of bird watching. I found that the birds I see in my back yard and neighborhood were easy to find and identify correctly. I would recommend this publication for use by any level of bird watcher from beginner to the most experienced. The graphics and color are wonderful. The color coded maps, showing summer and winter ranges for each species, are very helpful.
EXCELLENT CHOICE FOR FIELD GUIDE June 23, 2006 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I do recommend this one highly! I have been birding for well over fifty years now and have used and own quite a number of guides. This work is a great choice. I have used Peterson's guides for years and will probably go to my grave using his guides as my primary choice, but old dogs can learn new tricks and I carry this guide with me along with a few others anytime I am in the field. It is a great supplemental. For myself, as one who has a horrible time with shore birds in particular, often times just one guide will not work. This field guide gives me more information and I find myself turning to it more and mroe for verifications. It is well designed, well organized and quite accurate. Recommend this one highly.
The handiest field guide to North American birds May 1, 2006 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
According to the author, Kaufman Guides are "the best and fastest way to get started... to send you outside quickly, putting names on what you find". If that is the objective, the 'Kaufman Field Guide to Birds of North America' has realised it admirably.
Aimed at the beginner rather than the expert, the facing-page format allows illustrations, text, and range map for each bird to be viewed simultaneously, at one opening of the book. That is a major advantage over, say, the Peterson Field Guide series. As for the illustrations, Kaufman opts for digitally enhanced photographs over paintings, the idea being to combine the strengths of a real, photographic representation with the flexibility of a painting. There are more than 2,000 depictions of birds in natural conditions, all of them processed digital images based on photographs. Range maps show where each species is common or rare and indicate migratory status.
A further advantage over most other North American bird guides is the inclusion of all the regularly occurring birds, so you do not need to purchase separate field guides for the East and West.
For anyone with a casual to enthusiastic interest in birds, this is the field guide to get. It will enable you to 'search and locate' fairly easily. Even the experienced birder may find him / herself carrying this handy little guide and leaving the heavier tomes (Sibley) in the car.
