4 out of 5 stars Calling it a "Hard TIme" doesn't do it justice...   March 11, 2006

Of course I'd seen the photos - but the intensity of the suffering of those who lived through the dust bowl was still not clear to me until I read this. It is certainly not a light, happy read and I would have appreciated a little broader scope to the reporting, but by concentrating on the Texas & Oklahoma panhandles at the epicenter of the disaster Egan has provided a human-scale description of real life in real hard times. I won't be bored the next time I drive through on I-40. From the Cherokee to the XLT ranch to the wheat boom to the dust bowl in less than 80 years, that country saw change like no other.

5 out of 5 stars Should be read by students of history and natural resources   March 9, 2006

The days of the Great Depression have typically been seen through the eyes of a camera. Most of the pictures tell the story, yet those pictures often show up time and again in disparate published works, thereby shielding the reader from the human pathos of this era and the character and plight of the men and women who lived through it.

This book recreates the facts and events leading up to the Dust Bowl in the context of the world around it. The inclusion of and impetus for the resource management decisions made in this pioneering time demonstrates the research and factual basis for this wonderful book.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Dust Bowl description   March 9, 2006

Excellent history of the Western US Dust Bowl conditions of the 1920's and 1930's. The author describes the events leading up the the start of the dust bowl conditions and gives vivid and detailed descriptions of individuals and families and how they lived and survived in the horrible wind driven dust storms in Western Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas and Colorado. I have to believe the the author either read diaries and journals of those people or else talked to them because the descriptions are detailed and real. Just hearing about dust storms doesn't prepare the reader for the actual conditions and poverty that people had to endure. It is difficult to believe that anyone actually stayed as the storms and the drought and the poverty lasted for many years. If I were to improve the book I would add more photos. There are only a few and they are small.

4 out of 5 stars The Living History of the Dust Bowl : A Personal Family of Memories   March 8, 2006
This particular volume not only provided a refresher of this epic period of American History, it brought to life the stories shared by my mother and maternal grandparents. My grandfather was a worker and supervisor for the Civilian Conservation Corps and many of his friends in our home town were his co-workers and those he supervised during this trying struggle for survival of people and the nation he bravely fought for during WWI. In my opinion it should be a must read for history buffs and those families with such expereiences as mine. I will soon be using it as a resourse for a high school economics seminar. David M. This book blows you away!!! A page tuner if there ever was one. Egan has done a masterful job of following the lives of people who lived The Worst Hard Time. The book is a study in social, poliitcal, and personal failures. But through all the difficult time experinced by the families and people introduced in the book, the book reaffirms the enduranace and tenacity of the human spirit.
