A balanced account and assessment February 5, 2007 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
This book is well written and presents a reasonably balanced account of the current situation. It covers both the developments in China and the effects of those developments on China's trading partners, including the United States and Europe. It's definitely worthwhile reading.
Highly Recommend January 22, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Noticed the book review in the Financial Times and ordered it. Very quick and easy read concerning the problematic issues China faces over the next several decades (financial, energy, environmental, population, civil unrest, etc...) as well as how the rest of the world will have to increasingly adapt to the country's rising power and influence (both positively/negatively). As expected, Kynge does not paint a pretty picture for those in the manufacturing sector (outside of China) as quality, which was once the differentiating factor, is now there.
Best Business/Social Book on China Yet January 10, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
written by a long-time resident of china, this is the real deal. insightful and worth the read!
Outstanding and Factual January 8, 2007 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This is written by a Western journalist and Chinese speaker who has lived in China for 20 years. This very balanced book tells how China grows and the accompanying benefits and enormous costs for the West. For the Chinese people, working 15 hours a day in a factory may be better than living on a 1/2 acre rural farm. Unfortunately, they may not live long because the massive pollution of air and water will eventually take its toll. The disregard for nature has consequences for world rain forests. I was surprised to learn that Chinese coal burning accounts for 1/3 of the mercury levels in US rivers.
Do the corporate executives care? They're making enormous personal fortunes boosting profits by exporting jobs. Fully 25% of multinational corporate profit comes from the China trade. As for the US workers - they can buy stuff cheap at Walmart. The Walton family cleans up because China doesn't.
The author isn't negative on China and he talks about a lot more than pollution. He puts into context currency exchange rates, the decision making processes, corruption, and why China is on this development path. He reports what is.
He warns that the absorbtion of Western manufacturing will eventually expand to services and technical businesses. In fact, that's the objective.
Read this book for a clear-eyed perspective on China.
Good China scene setting January 7, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
China is everywhere these days. As such, China Shakes the World will help you appreciate the magnitude of China's impact on the world.
If you want to know how to do business in the China era of business, I also recommend The China Executive, which has all the tools and above all wisdom that you will need to succeed.
