5 out of 5 stars Never leave home without it   January 22, 2008

As the author of I Never Liked Those C-130's Anyway I know a good book when I see one. This guide has been a joy to possess. I have been able to identify birds and fowl that have stumped me for years.
Set up a bird feeder by a window and just sit with this book in your lap. You will be entertained for hours.

5 out of 5 stars Great resource!   January 7, 2008
This book continues to be the end-all go-to resource when trying to identify birds. Of the dozen of so books I have, this one gets used by far. This purchase was recently made for a friend that had borrowed my copy and hadn't seen a way to get it back to me for a couple of months.

I've provided a link to another book that I think is just the field compliment to the Sibley's. The nice thing about the Peterson (Kaufman) guide is the illustration of the under wings in flight. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars The Holy Grail of Field Guides   December 30, 2007
Not only is this book an incredible field guide, but makes a brilliant coffee table book as well as excellent bedside book. I can stare at the images for hours. Exquisitely detailed and very informative. I could go on and on, but why? Just read the other reviews...this is a masterpiece that will stand the test of time.

5 out of 5 stars The most comprehensive guide yet! Excellent!!!   December 21, 2007
This is the most comprehensive field guide of North American birds I have seen yet. And having looked at, or having used, several field guides for foreign countries, this book excels them all! If only a field guide of this nature was available for the birds of Japan...

Some may complain that this field guide lacks some habitat and behavior information. But if that were all contained in one volume, we'd probably have something the size of a phone book, or pulpit Bible. The purpose might then be defeated.

What the Sibley guide lacks in behavior or habitat information is probably well covered in the National Geographic Guide. With just these two field guide to birds of NA, "In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established" (2 Corinthians 13:1). Yes, I believe this Biblical principle is practicle in God's revelation of nature as well.

Just one little tidbit here. As far as I can recall, only David Sibley clearly says that the white wing patch in the underwings of the immature Golden Eagle is not always present. That would have saved me a good bit of confusion had I known that in my first sighting of that majestic bird 29 years ago near Leeds Point, NJ.

Due to the larger size of this book, some bird watchers may prefer to use this book at home as a reference. However one may use this book, it is a must for every bird lover. I can't recommend it highly enough.

David Sibley's work is to be highly commended in my estimation.

5 out of 5 stars Sibley is so helpful!   July 1, 2007

BACK IN THE DAYS...
when I was a young, inexperienced, birdwatcher of age 5, I found this book at a bookstore and started flipping through its pages. When my folks were ready to go, I would not leave it. So we bought the book, thinking "Was this book really worth it?" And it was.

3 YEARS LATER...
Sibley's guide is awesome! I could look at it for hours. It has got top-notch info that is suprisingly helpful for any person interested in birds. If you are a beginner, you will learn so much from it (I did!) and if you have studied birds for a while, you will get to know species better.

Go to your nearest bookstore or library to find it. It's really worth it!
