Our son's favorite book, read daily! 10 Stars! June 18, 2006 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
At the top of our 5 year olds book list is an encyclopedia: The Smithsonian's Animal.
A gift from his grandparents, this book -- while not a childrens book really -- has become one of his daily "reads". We have spent countless hours exploring this book with all of it's amazing species from every corner of the animal kingdom. He often chooses this book as one of his nightly books to read. When he does this we choose a few pages from the front of the book -- which covers habitats and other broad topics such as anatomy, classifications, conservation and life cycles -- or we choose a small family or large genus to read about. Often we choose the animals to read about from events in the day, whether from a science show, another book, or an animal spotted in town or at the aquarium.
With more than 2,000 species detailed and at least that many breathtaking photographs this is a visually and informationally rich resource. It is beautifully designed and the information it contains is well organized. Because it is not a childrens book, Johann will continue to enjoy this book for years to come. Even now we can see how he absorbs more from it today than he did a year ago when he first recieved it. If you have a young future biologist/zoologist/conservationist in your family I can't possibly recommend this book enough. 5 Stars? Try 10!
Informative and AWSOME!! May 31, 2006 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
We bought this book for our son who wanted a "Great Big Book of Everything" and we definately found it with this book! We have the hardcover version, which was a steal on sale, and it has been used by our kids and nephews often. We just purchased the softcover version for one of our nephews and he was truly excited! This is such a wonderfully informative book that has something for everyone! A must for anyone with an interest in animals!!
Wow!!! April 4, 2006 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
One of the best written books I have seen. It is a must for all shelves especially with children. This is a huge book with fascinating facts and pictures. The book opens up with Introduction then discusses about habitats. Then the real fun starts. Starting from mammals down to invertebrates the book is a real fun to read.
A truly remarkable book for the scientist and animal lover April 1, 2006 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Our family of animal lovers adores this book. It has beautifully stunning photographs of exotic and commonplace animals, as well as the scientific information to make the book appropriate for college-level scientific study. With a collection of over 100 animal books, this is the one our kids go to first for scientific information, beautiful photos, and explanations that are truly readable. I would recommend it for any age. We received this book about a month ago and, as far as I can tell, the scientific classifications are incredibly up-to-date. I have found mistakes on the internet frequently, but this is very accurate.
The Holy Grail Of Nature March 27, 2006 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Once, in fifth grade, a quite well known girl came to school one day lugging a heavy book around and asking everyone what their favorite animal was. She never once failed in looking it up. Even with exotic animals like pangolins, and inland taipans. After that day, I was hooked, I searched and searched and finally found it. I have been even more thrilled ever since I got it, and I feel has helped me toward my goal of becoming a field bioligist. I think Animal is good for all ages, used for research by adults, and looked at by children.
