My favorite movie of ALL time October 3, 2005 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is such a wonderful movie. It's filled with passion and emotion. And it made me see mountain gorillas in a different light, a good light. I highly reccomend this to everyone. But just to warn you this movie is not exactly factual with everything. Some things in it are exaggerated and are not true. That's hollywood for ya. But I suggest to read Dian Fossey's book "Gorillas in the Mist" to understand her story and the saving of mt. gorillas better.
By far Michael Apted's masterpiece! August 21, 2005 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Above the incandescent and vivid performance of Sigourney Weaver, the primatologist, whose overwhelming devotion to the once nearly extinct mountain gorillas of Central Africa led to her eventual murder. The storytelling is ravishing and let the viewer with the absolute conviction she crossed the border line around the investigation and the self experience in many issues. A magnificent and disturbing movie, hard to forget in years. A winner film!
Biographical account of Dian Fossey, mountain gorilla guru in Congo/Rwanda July 4, 2005 3 out of 6 found this review helpful
Very interesting movie about Dian Fossey, a dedicated conservationist that dedicated her life to preserving mountain gorillas. She was a bit crazy - no doubt about it, but very dedicated. The movie takes place in the Congo, then moves to Rwanda when Fossey is kicked out of the Congo. From other sources, the movie is not all that accurate, but what movie is? It gets the main points right, and it makes for a compelling movie. The downsides from my point of view were 1. the romance, which, since this is Hollywood, was way overdone, 2. the incessant coughing by Dian Fossey - so she smoked? She didn't die from lung cancer - why do we have to listen to her cough the whole movie - why get that one fact so accurate when they distort so many other aspects of the movie? and 3. Why is she so dedicated to these gorillas? She gets a little crazy at some points.
Overall a good movie and worth a watch - the scenery from Africa is really great.
"If they want a witch, I'll give em a witch." April 5, 2005 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This movie touched me in so many ways. To see the talented Sigourney Weaver play the part of Dian Fossey is a treat. The raw emotion conveyed when "Dian" goes after Vanvecton for having stolen a baby gorilla still gives me shivers. You can see the fury portrayed in Weaver's eyes.
Compassionate and very sad.... April 3, 2005 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Weaver gives an oscar winning performance in Gorilla's in the mist, which is a tryue story about a primatologist named Dian Fossey. It's a very compassionate film, but can also be a tearjerker as it demonstrates the lack of respect for wild animals that people have, and the heartless murder of magnificant and fascinating animals who are just trying to enjoy their freedom in the wild and protect their babies from our species and other predators.
