5 out of 5 stars An excellent book!   August 21, 2008

Design Maven's review could not be more inaccurate than it is. A CALDECOTT CELEBRATION includes information about Mordicai Gerstein's 2004 Caldecott, so it can hardly be considered a book about the past. Additionally, Leonard Marcus includes information about David Wiesner, Chris Van Allsburg, and Maruice Sendack. Wiesner has won the Caldecott most recently for FLOTSAM in 2007. Though the Marcus book details Wiesner's work for TUESDAY, rather than FLOTSAM, A CALDECOTT CELEBRATION will never be dated. Sendack, Wiesner and Van Allsburg produce timeless books. Mr. Marcus is THE authority on children's literature, including picture books. After enjoying A CALDECOTT CELEBRATION, look for his other distinguished books. You cannot go wrong with a book by Leonard S. Marcus. B. McDonald

2 out of 5 stars just OK   June 11, 2008

I am studying childrens book illustration and thought this book would be helpful. I found the authors and illustrators that they review are just too old/long ago to be very relevant to illustrators today. The design and printing of the book is weak, especially since it is a basically a book about design. "Show and Tell" from Chronicle Books is much better overview of recent, great illustrators.
