Invaluable and friendly April 6, 1998 Ususlly I have difficulties with teach-books, as they make me sleep. This one keeps me awake reading until late night. Invaluable advice and encouragement for self-confidence are given in a friendly, down-to-earth way, with humor and style. Excellent.
Probably the best of his books March 29, 1998 I have studied the photos several times over a three year period. Just reading his comments on his photogrpahs is very beneficial to improving my technique. The text is great and the book really inspires one to try harder to get good nature photogrpahs. A few photos where he says he opened up a stop I would not do so perhaps a few errors but it is best to bracket good scenes as film is cheaper than transportation. A wonderful book.
A great way to spend $20 March 26, 1998 If you want to learn as much as possible without laying out long green for a class or hardback textbook, pick up Shaw's volume. Your photography will improve more using Shaw's techiques than with a fancy, new lens (a lot cheaper at least!). John's language is very clear; never intidimating nor dumbed-down. Many nice high-quality photographs alongside text.
Beginners, Look no further September 11, 1997 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
John Shaw will explain the mysteries of photography to you: f-stops, shutter speeds, exposure compensation, film speed, lenses, filters, composition, light, and color all come together in this wonderful book from an expert to a beginner. John Shaw differs from Galen Rowell, in that Shaw takes pictures of the mundane, while Rowell's photographs are those of the majestic and the magical. The world has places for both
Wonderful......uncomplicated May 9, 1997 I have a couple of John's books, and as far asI'm concerned everything he does is a "must read"for photographers. His knowledge is obvious but not intimidating....he's so easy to understand. There's no questioning how he became one of the best.
