Excellent field guide, lovely images. January 2, 2003 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
I've always admired John Shaw, both for his wonderful images of nature and his elegant, precise and simple writing style. This is just one of his books I own. As always, this book is packed with sound, real world advice on nature photography. The section on close up photography is specially very insightful. As always, his images are very evocative and pleasing to the eye. To Shaw, nature seems more important than photography, and his images seem to reflect that sentiment. To this end, he has some valuable suggestions on how to photograph nature without disturbing or destroying it. I knew I had to buy this book the moment I went through it. Well worth the money.
Brilliant!!! October 22, 2002 6 out of 8 found this review helpful
Elaborate, precise, detailed and humorous language! ...and finally a book taking interested amateur photographers serious: Not again like almost every single (well recommemded) how-to-book with discriptions how to load the film etc. John Shaws photos are brilliant and well explained. Only drawback are his purchase recommendations: Though emphazising continously that ideas and understanding not expensive equipment leads to creative and technically correct photos most of the features considered as mandatory by John Shaw can only be found in Top-of-the-line models of each manufacturer (cameras, lenses, tripods, heads etc.). Most of the interested amateur photographers do not want to spend "$",- for a tripod head! However, no reason not to give a five star rating!
Excellent book for the budding photographer October 15, 2002 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
This book is excellent for those dabling in photography who want to improve. His coverage of basic photo techniques is very good. The discussion on exposure is the best I've ever read. The techniques worked perfectly the first time I used them. There is also excellent information on what equipment to buy. Some of it is too expensive for me to buy now, but I can save for the future. In summary, great book, well worth getting, reading and saving for future reference.
Always a great work! October 8, 2002 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
John Shaw has been my book mentor for over 15 years. He consistently publishes books of the highest educational value. This field guide is no exception. From the author of Nature's Palette: Art Through a Photographer's Eyes, Michael Impellizzeri
Excellent Book August 21, 2002 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
If you are just getting started in photography this book is an excellent choice. Quite easy to understand, this book will significantly increase your knowledge and understanding of fundamental photographic techniques. No one else explains exposure so succinctly and clearly as you will find it here. You also get to look at all of the wonderful photographs included in the book.
