must book for Nature Photography January 7, 2007 16 out of 16 found this review helpful
I am an armature photographer, which studied photography for one academic year in Camera Obscura (one of Israel's leading photography schools). Reading the book was equal to a second year. The book covers basic photography concepts and technique (DOF, lenses ect.)as well as a very practical what you need to know and get in order to start working in the field. I must say that a great deal of my equipment was bought and upgraded based on the recommendations of John Shaw. One of the import issues the book deals with (including some very good examples) is horizontal vs. vertical positioning of the camera and the issue of cropping effect on how the image "feels". Any new photographer that wants to start nature photography should read this book, whether he uses a DSLR or a point and shot. I go further and recommend it to any one planning a nature vacation, so when he shows his pictures to family and friends it will amaze them instead of bored them. Great and practical book.
SHAW IS THE BEST December 7, 2006 13 out of 13 found this review helpful
Like all of John Shaw's books (yes, I've read them all), this one is a winner.
I have been an amateur photographer for 40 years and have long since learned the basics of exposure and composition. However, my approach, until reading Shaw's books, was quite haphazard.
Shaw and I both use Nikons and have much of the same equipment. Of course, he has about a million times more talent than I do.
In any case, I wasn't getting anywhere near the sharpness that he was until I heeded his most important piece of advice. Buy a good tripod and head and use it for every shot. Since taking his advice, I can now print to the next larger size for almost every shot that I take.
I prefer to continue shooting film which makes Shaw's books perfect for me. However, most of what Shaw writes applies equally to digital capture. Regardless of the media, the basics of good exposure and composition still apply.
If you need information specifically about digital photography, there are plenty of other books available. I would recommend Shaw's "ebook" which is a "field guide" to Photoshop. I don't know if it's available on Amazon, but it should still be available on Shaw's own website.
For anyone serious about their photography and looking to improve it, Shaw's books are a "must read". Much of the material in this book can be found in his others, although each has enough unique material to make it worth the price.
I'd suggest not buying all of them. In addition to this book, I'd recommend "Focus on Nature", in which Shaw explains his thinking and equipment choice for each photo in the book.
Professional Help for My Amateur Obsession August 19, 2006 24 out of 26 found this review helpful
I find little more frustrating than downloading a series of photographs, only to find my "masterpieces" will serve as examples of mistakes to avoid.
Over-exposed. Under-exposed. Poor f-stop selection. Vibration. You name the problem; I have a "masterpiece" to illustrate it.
This book of beautiful nature photographs was written for me. It promises to teach me to shoot impressive results every time my camera is focused in the great outdoors. Using his own exceptional work as examples, John Shaw discusses natural subjects and how to approach photographing them. He offers specific advice on equipment and lenses selection; shot composition; close-ups. The range of techniques to enrich various nature photographs makes for great reading and dreaming.
My hunch is this field guide will serve any photographer -- beginner, serious amateur, semi-pro, and pro--who encounters field challenges. John Shaw is an internationally acclaimed nature photographer. His work has been published in Outdoor Photographer, National Wildlife, Natural History, Sierra and Audubon.
Only time will tell, however, if it has the desired effect on my photographs.

Although the book was written well before the age of digital it is still applicable today. John shaw is one of the best nature photographers around and it is written for the beginner or the advanced photographer.
