 Great way to understand photography techiques March 2, 2006

This is my first photography book and I love it. I'm a beginner but I've learned a lot of technical skills in this book. It is good material for understanding photographic techniques. I purchased a separate book that will help me understand how to put these techniques into action by understanding how to set the camera itself. This book does not do that, but it gives you a great basic photography understanding.

This is a very nice reference for shooting different nature scenes. The author shows many different scenes and talks about composition, lighting, etc. There is also some great detail about equipment used for shooting nature scenes. (lenses, filters, etc, etc.) This is a great book for any beginner or intermediate photographer. I think if you're an advanced photographer, you probably already know most of this stuff. The book is nicely constructed and is full of color photos and explainations on how the shots were achieved. For me, I found the book very helpful and I will be keeping this one handy.

If you are a new comer, you can find better, basic books. If you are pro or amateur, you should already know everything written in this book. So who need this book?

Excellent book for anybody looking to improve their skills at nature photography

This is the of the best Nature photography books I have read and used. It covers so many things like, Exposure, equipment, film, lenses, composition, close-ups, portraiture, sunny 16, lighting, use of flash equipment, weather conditions, manual focus, auto focus, working in the field, action shots, stills, lens type, apertures, shutter speeds and so many other topics.
The book goes into detail in each of the subjects as far as how he got the shot, what he used and the thought process that went into selecting the equipment and deciding on what shot to take. The book provides beautiful photographic examples. There are multiples of some shots but with different settings to show how the same shot can be so dramatically different in terms of what it captures visually and emotionally.
The book is clear and concise. Readers that are beginner to intermediate photographers will gain a lot knowledge and understanding from this reading this book and keeping it as a reference book.
This is the first John Shaw book I have used but there will be others. The only slight draw back is that the book was published in 2000 and doesn't cover digital photography but everything in the book except for the section on film types is applicable to digital photography. You can't go wrong with this book.
