Great reference May 30, 2007 Just bought this for my sister because I use my copy every time my daughter asks me what type of bird is at the feeder. Very easy to identify with the great pictures.
somewhat juvenile February 20, 2006 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I was looking for more of a "field guide," and what I ended up with was what looks to me to be a childs picture book. The descriptions of the birds are simplistic: "Grouse are like jumbo-sized quail with broad, turkey-like tails." Types of birds are listed alphabetically rather than by type. Photographs are large and full color, with many taking up 1/4 to 1/2 of the page. I would recommend the book for older children (maybe 7-12ish?) but not for anyone looking for more scientific information on our avian friends.
Excellent Book August 31, 2005 I am very impressed with this book. Not only are the pictures beautiful, but all of the descriptions of each bird are very interesting. I couldn't put the book down. It also had every northeast bird that I was interested in, and more! I am very happy that I purchased this book, and will always keep it for reference.
Best photographic identification bird book. December 9, 2004 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
By limiting the birds to species in this area and by including photographs that make identification easier, this book has always been the first one I reference when a newcomer enters my backyard. The photos are clear and sharp and the descriptions are brief and informative. I have given it as a gift and often recommended it to others. It is pretty enough to keep on your coffee table. I only wish I could find it in hardcover!
A wonderful visual reference with stunning photograhs June 11, 2000 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
I was impressed upon receiving this book, as I had no idea of its size. The book is large in dimension- which is a nice change from all the field guides to birds whose pictures make bird identification challenging. Beyond the visual effects, the author seems to have a bit of wit as exemplified in his writing style. This is not one of the best reference books, as it lacks specific detail on habitat, migration, species, etc. I don't think the author intended to compete in that forum anyway; however, I do wish there was an index for quick reference. All in all, a book displaying good writing with moderate description- but with stunning photography.
