The Mystical Side of DC February 13, 2008 Bill Willingham is easily the best writer in comics right now. And with an interesting cast of characters like this I couldn't help but pick up this trade. Though coming in I was most interested in Blue Devil as the story progressed Ragman stole the show. I'd never heard of Ragman before this trade. In the chapter that was solely his I could not put this book down and as soon as I finished I turned right around and ordered volume two. I recommend this to anyone looking for a good read.
A relatively fun diversion. January 30, 2008 Shadowpact: The Pentacle Plot (2007) - Bill Willingham (Writer) Various (Art)
The Shadowpact are an interesting group, and I like them. I only wish they were written and drawn better. I love superheroes, and I have always loved them. The only thing I love more than superheroes in comics are superhero teams, and the Shadowpact are one of the cooler magic based teams out there. And when I say "cool", I am referring more to their powers and basic archetypes, rather than their personalities. I mean, they have your typical sorceress, a magic swordsman, a blue devil with a trident that blasts demons to hell, a man who absorbs souls to power himself up, a girl who controls the power of darkness, and a detective chimp. That, my friends, is a really cool combination. Again, I only wish the art and writing were better. As of right now, there is no serious development for any of the characters, and they are really just bland archetypes in terms of personality. Even Detective Chimp, who can potentially be extremely cool, is just your average comedic relief. However, I will make one exception for Ragman because he is given some more character development in the final issue "Ragtime". However, I do like that Willingham includes a lot of irony and humor in his writing. Also, in my opinion, the bits with the Phantom Stranger are pretty funny. When it comes to the art, its all relatively standard fare to me. Nothing really stands out too much; it's merely satisfactory. So overall, due to the cool team and fun plot, The Pentacle Plot is an entertaining diversion and I would recommend it.
A solid piece of work October 20, 2007 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
In Shadowpact, Willingham finally fleshes out a DC character who always seemed like he could be cool, but never was. I always thought Ragman was awesome-looking and had cool powers, but nobody ever wrote a good story about him. Bill Willingham has finally given us a Ragman to care about and root for!
Bill's signature viciousness is on full display in this comic. His fight scenes have always been portrayed as wars that need to be won, against truly evil antagonists, and nothing is any different here. Obviously, nothing is as good as his FABLES work, but Shadowpact is far better than the usual superhero fare we expect from DC. Highly recommended for fans of good, thrilling writing.
The art is the reason I've given this book a five-star review. WILLINGHAM IS DRAWING AGAIN! For those of us who grew up on Elementals, this is a Big Deal. Willingham has an appealing, unique style that doesn't look like anyone else's, and it's great to see it again.
a fun read July 6, 2007 1 out of 5 found this review helpful
If you like fables or magic based stories this series is for you. Bill Willingham is a great writer and the art is perfect for this story
acceptable, worth reading but not as good as before July 2, 2007 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
Compare to "Day of Vengeance (Countdown to Infinite Crisis)"; the quality of art is not as good; more comic like; in turn the comics cannot move the story forwards. The story is OK; villians are introduced and the team worked together but the character development is also very basic.
