2 out of 5 stars What was the point   April 24, 2008

Many recent minis from DC have been used to give new origins to lesser known characters, with the erroneous assumption being that they needed one in the first place. The rationale for this is that an update is required to modernize the character for a new generation of fans. An important point that seems to have been forgotten is whether or not it is an improvement over the original. If not, it is a wasted effort, which brings us to this trade. It isn't so much the new beginning but the story itself, or what little there is of it, that is the problem. A huge chunk of this six issue tale is consumed by numerous and irrelevant action scenes; there is some serious decompression here folks. Cameos by Batman and the Joker are thrown in just to add to the star quotient and serve little purpose, rendering what little that is left as inconsequential filler. The Creeper could be an interesting member of the DCU if written well, which regrettably was not the case here. The central theme of this review has been the pointlessness of many aspects of the story. Unfortunately that word aptly and concisely describes this project as a whole.

4 out of 5 stars Good Fun   January 12, 2008

I've always had a soft spot for Steve Ditko's creation, the Creeper. He's never been much more than a guest star with a cool costume appearing occasionally in various DC titles. This volume is a collection of a mini-series which serves as a gentle reboot and introduction to new readers. While not ground-breaking, it succeeds at its task and is an enjoyable read. Justiniano's artwork is a good match for this character. Good Fun!
